Erin

Mirror, Mirror

Erin grew up in a broken household, a dead beat mom and a drunk dad. Their best friend shot their dad and Erin ran away from home after that. It didn't take long to get picked up by a local gang on the isle and for them to start their life over with a new family. Stealing at first, robbing if the pay was right. It was during this time of their life that their power began to manifest and made them and even more dangerous killer. Shadows became their ally, and mirrors their hideout. They were coined the name "Mirror, Mirror" for their ability to not only mimic others appearances through magic, but to mold in to shadows and strike where it was least expected. Once they became aware of the world at large, the stakes only got higher, and the targets a lot more dangerous. Now working for a particular group of individuals, they're only around for the money.

Erin's Video Journal collection

[Video attachment dated "Day 1 Badass powers"]

The video begins with Erin adjusting the camera on a stand, "dude you hit record too early!" They say to someone behind the camera. "Sorry, sorry, fat fingered, but the red light's on so we're good." There's some shuffling and Erin takes a few steps back, wearing a binder but nothing else above the waist. "Day one, right? Day one, alright this is for my personal collection, I mean how many people get fucking super powers? Today... Some weird shit happened, and now I can do this." They ball their right hand up in to a fist and turn their arm towards the camera. Black ink moves across their body and juts out from their forearm, creating a long, black blade. "Some fucking Sith shit right? We don't know what else I can do, but we're recording all this." The blade shimmered and barely registered on camera, darkness coalesced in to a single point. Soon after, the blade dissipates and Erin smiles at the camera. "I'm coming for you."

[Video Attachment dated "Day 76 what is going on?!?!?"]

The video begins with Erin sitting on a stool, bruised and beaten up with a joint in their mouth. "Dude the camera's rolling," an off screen voice says followed by a finger coming in to view. Erin looks at the camera and blows out a puff of smoke. "76 right? We're on.. fuck day 76 of weird ass super powers." They lean forward and rest their elbows on their knees. "Shit is getting weird now, the blades came first, then I started melding with shadows. I call that one Shadow Meld, I know original." They stick their hand towards a shadow on the wall and their hand melds with it and turns in to shadow before they pull it back. "That was on day 15 I think, day 20 was the shadow traps. That one's kinda rad, I can like... mess with shadows and make them real, hurt people. But.... This morning I looked in the mirror and saw someone else's face, Dad's, turns out I can copy people's appearances. It's not perfect and I can only copy what I can see, and we figured out the look is all flipped, like looking in a mirror. That's when shit got really weird." They took another long drag and exhaled slowly, rubbing their brow. "I tried to punch the mirror, and my hand slipped through. There's like... A whole nother world on the other side man, it's like ours but like... wrong. It's so empty and cold, there's nothing there except you and whatever the world would look like through a mirror. I'm calling it Mirror World, and I can't spend a lot of time there. Something kicks me out, but when I come out it's right where I left off. Like, I actually did move through a space but we have no fucking clue how. And I can make portals as it turns out." The joint falls from between their fingers and they stomp it out, looking off screen for a moment before looking back. "I think there's something fucking weird with these powers, I don't know what but something isn't right with that mirror world. I'm going to try and see if I can stay longer and figure some shit out." They reach over to the camera and the video ends.

[Video attachment dated "Day 100 this is the big one"]

The video begins with Erin trying to take the camera with them through to the Mirror World but the footage is cut between the time it entered and the time it left. No footage of the Mirror World can be recorded. "God fucking.. well it was worth a shot huh? Day 100, update, I can fuck with other people's motor functions. It's like, all the signals in their brain just get fried and flip. They start talking backwards and they can't tell their left from their right. I can also do this now." Erin's form shimmers and disappears from the camera's view. It moves up and down  bit, an offscreen hand waving. "Just fucking make like houdini and shit, can't be tracked. We tried GPS, cameras, I don't leave footprints, fuck I don't even leave finger prints when I do this." Their image returns and they start walking with the camera as they talked. "We haven't figured out anything about the Mirror World, but there's some people who say they have some answers or the possibility of finding some." A voice offscreen interjects, "and I think its a terrible fucking idea." Erin turns and points at the voice. "And no one fucking asked you! Fuck.. Anyways, I can do that and I can move a lot faster now, even faster than before. If I move like that too much though it can fuck me up, so it's kinda an as an emergency type deal." Their attention is taken off screen, and they turn the camera off.

[Video attachment dated "I'm not fucking counting anymore"]

Erin adjusts the camera and props it on a table, sitting down on a sofa. They looked shaken up, bloody and not all of it was theirs. In their hand was a needle that they were injecting in to their forearm. "He asked me not to disclose his name in case anyone found this stuff. I might burn it all, but I think for now I'll hold on to it.. for his memory at least. There was.... Trouble, and my powers went completely wired. There's a whole other level I haven't tapped in to yet and I don't know what the fuck is going on. My friend is.. dead, he fell off a cliff, no, he was pushed, someone pushed him. I didn't see who it was but we saw some shit we shouldn't have. Some satanic ritual out in the middle of the fucking woods, why the fuck did we go there? Fucking.." They throw the needle to the side and bury their head in their hands. "I could've protected him, but I wasn't fast enough. Fuck me man, well... My only option left is to go join a bunch of Pagan weirdos. Maybe I can get something out of them and.. Figure out where this goes from here. I want to see what else these powers can do, and I'll have to keep going on my own now." They reach over and the feed cuts.

[End of recordings]

Flavor Requirements

Parts of your character might call for specific "flavor requirements."

  • Higher Purpose: Erin's friend sits across the table from them, sharpening a knife while they count their money. "So like.. What's it you want to do with your life man? Stealing and killing can't be all of it, right?" Erin looks up at them, the sliest of smirks creasing at the base of their lips. "Money, bitches and power, why? So no one can fuck me over again. I want money so I don't have to borrow it, I want power so no one can take it from me again, the more of both I get the better I feel." Their friend pauses, thinking about what they said. "What about your friends?" To which Erin meets their gaze. "What about em?"
  • Amphibious: "Bro you've never been able to swim, you hate the beach." The pair walked towards the canal, the best way in to the target's house was by the river front but a boat was too obvious. They'd have to swim, between the two of them it was nearly a death sentence. "Trust me on this one," Erin says to them. "Trust you? Bro we don't know what all you can do." They remove their top, strap in their knife and take the plunge. Shadowy tendrils rose from them like an octopus, intangible but with force and momentum. The moment Erin touched the water, their shadow changed, and they had the same capabilities as the animal it took the form of.
  • Deep Diver: Treasure was often where others couldn't go, and sunken ruins were all over the island. All Erin had to do was change their shadow, and they could reach those depths without issue. Light wasn't an issue for them either, shadows their quiet companion that never left.
  • Addiction: "Look... all these powers are cool and all but you're not immortal. You're going to OD man.." A concerned friend finds Erin by a dumpster, drugged out of their mind. Cocaine was the flavor today, other days it was weed, sometimes meth, they took whatever they felt like. "Fugck offah," was about the best they could muster, as their friend took them home.
  • Clinging: "Okay what the fuck!?" They hadn't seen Erin clinging to the ceiling, their shadow the shape of a lizard before they dropped with the grace of a cat. "Bro, what's the fucking limit? Like where does this shit end?" Erin exclaims with open arms, their power made them feel like a god some days doing as they pleased. There was nowhere they couldn't go or climb.
  • Compulsive Behavior: It was a habit, even just going to the grocery store they needed to swipe something. They couldn't keep their hands to themselves, stealing was in their nature. They had to take something because it wasn't theirs and they wanted it to be.
  • Phobia: "Of all the things to be afraid of, its seriously guns?" Their friend kicks back in the sofa, biting their nails. "I can't hold one man, not since what happened with Dad. I don't mind being around them but I can't use one, besides they're loud anyways and I have better methods to deal with people."
  • Code of Honor: "I have few rules, Don't hurt kids, don't steal from the poor, and don't fucking stand for abuse. You shot that fucking kid man, now I gotta do something about it."
  • Very Fast: "I'm fast as fuck boy!" Their otherworldly power had them moving like a shadow with incredible speed. Normal people could barely track them with their naked eye. Any time Erin moved quick, part of their body wasn't corporeal, less drag and less weight to push forward. Whatever this new power was, Erin used it every chance they had.
  • Secret: "You tell a fucking soul and you're dead." Erin sat on their bed in an old motel room, getting ready for the night. Their friend sat in the bed across from them, raising their hands defensively. "I get it, I get why and no one's going to hear about it." Erin couldn't stand abuse, and for good reason. When they saw a kid with a bruise on his arm trying desperately to get free from his father's grip, Erin lost their shit. That wasn't a secret, but what their father did to them only a few people knew. "It's shitty your own dad did that to you man, I'm not saying I'm glad he got capped but that's fucking sick, raping your own kid. Especially you? Like, I'm sure that wasn't great for your whole.. gender deal." Erin didn't reply, but it was true and it was something they wanted to take with them to the grave. "This? Like this its cool, but you ever talk like that again, or breathe a word of this outside my confidence you're fucking dead." Their friend nodded, and they went to bed.

Backstory Connections
List the characters you are connected to, the story between you, and who gets what Leverage. Everyone must do at least three connections.

  • Moonrise Coven: Erin works for the Coven as a free agent, completing jobs in their area of expertise when the pay was good. They don't necessarily believe in their ideologies, but they do compensate them well and that's the important part.
  • Nina: Erin had stolen Bradan’s staff, at the request of the Moonrise Coven. When Erin caught Nina in their storage locker trying to get the staff, she proved to be quite the slippery little thing, dodging and escaping all their traps in what became an entertaining dance of flame and shadow. Nina escaped mostly unscathed in the end, but harbors curiosity toward them. They can have Leverage on her for knowing that she’s magical.
  • Bradan: Erin was hired by the Moonrise coven to steal Bradan's staff, which they successfully did until it was returned at the behest of a wish and a particularly cute Genie girl.
  • Cillian: Erin had to bail Cillian out of a bad deal, they worked for his family and knew he was in to some shit on occasion. But he got caught up in the wrong thing, and luckily Erin was there to bail them out.

Other Info
Optional - any other information you'd like to provide is welcome!

Magic

Shadow Magic:

  • Conjure Shadow Weapon: Erin is able to conjure shadowy weapons from the shadows around them. Their usual appearance is in the shape of an 8 inch blade that extends from the forearm. This weapon lasts a number of minutes equal to the margin of Success of the skill roll.

  •  Shadow Meld: Erin is capable of making their body semi fluid and meld with existing shadows, they create no smell and make no sound in this state. This ability can be used in place of Stealth, Camouflage, Dodge, or other skills used to avoid detection.

  • Vice Trap: Erin can create a trap in a location using the shadows in that area. The trap must conform with the shape of the shadow and can have a range of effects based on creative use. Snares, spikes, mostly simple traps without complex machinations. This ability is contested with Dodge or Escape.

Mirror Magic:

  • Unstoppable Escape: Erin is capable of passing through mirrors and other reflective surfaces to enter a world mirrored by our own. They can move in this separate dimension unopposed by influences from the real world and appear in the space where they would have been in the real world. To others, Erin appears to teleport through the mirror to a different location, though to Erin time passes much differently there. If they connect two mirrors in the Mirror World, they can pass objects or even people through the portal. Others do not see the Mirror World as Erin sees it, simply being pulled through a mirror and appearing elsewhere. This other dimension is a secret Erin guards closely and one of the secrets to their powers. Erin is able to move through this dimension equal to 10 seconds per success margin rolled.

  • Are you sure your left is your right?: Erin can flip the reflection of a target, causing them to speak backwards and flip their motor functions. The target opposes with a Resist Influence roll, the duration of the effect is a number of minutes equal to Erin's margin of success. The effect gives -2 to Agility and Dex, and any rolls that involve movements that aren't covered by those. Speech becomes backwards, only intelligible to others who are also speaking backwards, though they can try to roll Gesture to convey ideas.

  • Blink and you'll miss it:  Erin can for very short bursts increase their already inhuman speed by ridiculous proportions. These short bursts of speed can be used to cover large distances quickly but also for slight of hand movements where their hands are moving so fast that the eye can't register they moved. The latter is the more common use than the former, as the former can become dangerous for Erin's body if they sustain high velocity for too long. To burst with speed, roll with this skill. On a success, that counts as your Running or Acting Quickly roll should one be needed. On a fail by 4 or less, Erin fails to control their speed, resulting in a small mishap. On a fail by 5 or more, the mishap results in injury.

Conjuration and Aid Magics:

  • Body Double:  Erin can look at a target and make themselves look like their reflection. Characteristics and traits of the person are flipped, a successful perception check could see through the illusion. The disguise is otherwise uncanny in appearance, though Erin can only duplicate what they can see.

  • Untraceable: For a period of time based on success margin, Erin becomes untrackable by mundane means. They do not show up on security cameras and they do not leave any physical evidence of their passing. The duration of this ability equals a number of minutes equal to margin of success.
