Research Level 1:You are allowed to look up the Black Bear's statistics in Kanka even during gameplay.
Research Level 2:You are allowed to tame Black Bears with the activity Taming Animals. Since Black Bears are tamable at base level, this Research Level is not worth anything. This might change in the future though.

Level 3:You have advantage on anything dealing with a Black Bear. (For
example, if the Black Bear forces you to make a Strength saving throw, you have advantage on that saving throw. Another example is
that you attack a Black Bear on your turn, you have advantage on the attack
roll to hit that Black Bear. The final example is giving a Black Bear a Medicine
check to stabilize it, you also have advantage on that skill check.) The
DM will tell you how much damage you've done to it total if you ask on
your turn.
