Expedition 39a - Koko's Account

July 28, 2022

Another stint of guard duty and my army of chaos was rested and ready to meet with this so-called rat people and rid them of their nemesis, but the warrior advised we should hunt down the mysterious red-eyed object from another mountain tomb.

A quick reconnoitre of the entrance indicated some activity, so we spent a day watching for any occupants coming and going, but the crypt seemed unused, the stone door gave us no trouble but the dust on the stairs down told of recent denizens, so we made our way cautiously into the gloom.

A humming din arose and a half score of flying bugs attacked, one of them fatally stinging our mage, we battled them killing a couple, the remainder flew away and we winged one.

An entrance hall gave us three ways, one led to a small room with brass rings set in the wall, we puzzled for a while but could not determine their use, meanwhile the warrior hammered spikes into the main exit, risking the ire of creatures interested in the racket.

A wandering thief joined us as the opposite room revealed a downward stairway, but as we advanced our warrior and his noble dwarf triggered some floor device that sent a rusty portcullis down separating them from the rest of the gang, and narrowly missing my lieutenant and me.

As we tried to fathom the workings of the trap, a worrisome noise came from down the dark stair, and creatures could be seen emerging. Quickly passing oil to the warrior and dwarf they hurled lighted bombes towards some ugly shapes amassing below, meanwhile I gathered my strength and with the aid of my army lifted the portcullis a gap big enough.

The creatures seemed to have fled, so we jammed the door and looked at the larger entrance, carefully opening the great barrier revealed a vast room lined with pillars, the further walls could not be seen, so we threw some torches ahead to light our way.

The flares were met with a cacophony of shrieking and screaming, which appeared to be coming from large fungi gathered around the base of the pillars, they wailed and wafted their horrid sound which we were certain would bring inquiring occupants, so we made our leave quickly and empty handed.

That night we camped, and planned our continued assault.
