Adventurers

The greyish blob oozed up the stairs after the party, slow enough for them to summon their mercenary archers and pepper the thing into oblivion. They returned to the watery tomb and prodded around but were unable to locate any secret doorways. They packed the elaborate urn and continued winding their way around the mountain until they came across a barrow entrance half buried beneath fallen boulders.

With the mountainside sporting a few trees, the party split themselves up with a group of mercenaries each to fell them and bring back some rudimentary levers to clear some of the rubble away. Tyrion’s squad were surprised by some walking skeletons and lost one of the mercenaries, but otherwise the group laboured away without interruption.

Their tools meant they couldn’t work efficiently to lever away the boulders, but with nearly 30 pairs of hands available they were able to clear away access to the barrow after a couple of hours. This did disturb a nest of giant scorpions, however, and a trio of the arachnids chopped their way through several more hired labourers before the party could grab their weapons and deal with them.

This barrow was much drier as the party descended. At the foot of the spiral stairway they found a broken statue, a half-human half-beast form lying fat on its face with its feet still planted firmly on its pedestal. Hammering their way through a reinforced door to the side, they came face-to-face with an unholy figure launching itself at them from a sarcophagus. Without pausing to think, Harlin lowered his magical shield and met the assailant with a crunch in the middle. When he raised his head, he found the wight skewered upon his spear with a look of startled across its skin-drawn face, and then it dissipated leaving just worn old rags hanging from the weapon. He pocketed the bag of gems left behind in its place of rest.

Breaking down another door, the party found themselves in a peculiarly-flagstoned crypt, checkboard pattern with irregularly-sized slabs, with a large statue of a goat-headed humanoid at the far end. With his magical elven cloak and books, Tyrion snuck inside and peered into some alcoves set into the walls. Lifting a two-foot coffin from one, he turned to find flagstones knitting together from the floors and walls to form several faceless humanlike figures. The rest of the party dashed in as he started getting pulverised, Harlin fending them off as Rafin hastily applied the healing stick to the mortally-wounded elf.

Finding sharp weapons to be of reduced use against these walking stoneworks, Harlin tried bashing them with his shield. He managed to down two of the four, but was taking such a beating himself that the party were forced to quickly make their way back up the spiral stairs. The flagstone creatures did not appear to follow them.
