Meanwhile, 7/12 continues to try to teach Ocean how to speak, without success.
Grand Admiral Tulane recovers from his self-punishment of drinking the soup in the command level of Undertow, and demands an update to the state of the Merciless. Whitmont explains that repairs will take two days. Whitmont sees that among the notes in the command level on Grand Admiral Tulane's desk, the community water tanks have been kept higher than they actually are with a series of bricks dropped into the tank, displacing the water and making it appear higher.
Whitmont makes an excuse and heads down to her room with Sam to deal with the excess water she has generated with her dehumidifiers. After an hour of panic, she slumps in defeat, as Grand Admiral Tulane makes his way downstairs. He regards the excess water, the dripping dehumidifier, and demands an explanation. Whitmont explains that the water she generates using dehumidifiers is extremely power intensive, and is only small amounts. She didn't want people to know because it would set unrealistic expectations and impede her experiments and repairs(and it would impede her comfortable life).
Grand Admiral Tulane demands that this be kept quiet, but confiscates the majority of her water, arranging to have it taken from her room at the dead of night to add to the community level water tanks.
In two days, the Merciless heads out to the Fountains, crewed by Monk and Tao, led by Artiss, with Sam, Whitmont, Bell and 7/12 tasked to go along.
Aboard the Merciless, they pass by the Moon Well. As they do so, the crew averts their eyes, but Sam and Whitmont look towards the lights, as M0THER takes over 7/12. Sam is overwhelmed, but Whitmont hears the gentle commands of M0THER telling her to climb the Moon Well. As 7/12 jumps off the Merciless and swims quickly to the scaffolding, climbing up to the lip of the Moon Well, Bell follows her.
As 7/12 reaches the lip, looking into the darkness below and the strange lights above, she drops a set of keys into the Moon Well. Bell reaches her and tries to take her away, but she stumbles, and they both begin to fall into the darkness.
As they tumble, 7/12 is impaled by a harpoon. Artiss followed them up, and shot 7/12] with his weapon, the harpoon secured to a rope. Bell holds onto his daughter, and Artiss pulls them up.
The three return to the Merciless, and Sam examines 7/12's wound. Whitmont assists, knowing that the teenage girl is not quite human. And they find out that other than a small puncture wound, she's pretty much fine. They put a bandage on her, and avoid telling Bell about how little blood there was, calling it a "lucky shot".
Meanwhile, in the Undertow, Grand Admiral Tulane makes his way to the home of the Bell household. He speaks to Hermit, and then spends time with Ocean, who shows drawings of Bell and 7/12 falling (Jumping?) into the Moon Well.
The Merciless makes it to the Fountains and sees that the water barrels are still sitting there, untouched. They make their slow approach, uncertain of what else they'll find.
