The first section (the upper fortifications, also knows as the "Old Castillo") of this massive fortress was began sometime in the hundred years following the The Recall and the withdrawal of the Annwyn Empire, as a reaction to the growing lawlessness and piracy that came in the wake of those events.
When Carlos the Grand assumed control of the town and declared himself Duke, he completed the castle’s construction and then used it as his seat of power and administrative center. His grandson, Carlos II (also called Carlos Silverhand) expanded the fortress significantly, building the lower section of the fortress (the "New Castillo") and the sea gate.
Today, while still occupied and serving as the military headquarters of the Red Watch, much of the huge castle is dilapidated and in need of upkeep and repair, especially the Old Castillo which is virtually abandoned.
