Letter from Maria Cristina

My Dearest Freddy

I hope this letter finds you well, and pray that it finds you at all! I have heard some rumors of your exploits across The Northern Reach but alas, have been unable to keep up with your travels or ascertain your current location. So I send out many copies of this letter to places you are rumored to frequent in the hope that one finds you.  It seems you are having quite the adventures, as I read through the list of destinations! I pray to Erzulie to keep you safe and bring you back to me at some point, even for a visit!

The truth is, however, staying away from Haven Towne for the time being is probably wisest. My husband continues his crusade to liberate the people from the yoke of the oligarchs, who of course do not love him for this goal. Haven has become quite unstable of late, with violence in the streets becoming a common occurrence, as the thugs and henchmen of the moneyed interests attempt to intimidate and beat down the people and the growing spirt of revolution. They even go so far to hire evil Bokor to strike at me and assassins' to kill my husband. Of course they do not succeed. Our will is strong and we are on the side of justice, the people see that and our support among them grows daily. And of course Erzulie preserves us. We will persevere. But this town is hardly a safe place for anyone known to be associated with us, if you find your way to Haven, take care and keep to the shadows.

This goes double for you friend Radiant Lightbringer. He has caused quite the stir in the stuffy halls of the Orthodox Church! His simple words have brought to light the hypocrisy of the clergy, the people finally take notice and begin to ask awkward questions! There are even those inside the Church who think reform is needed and begin to agitate for it, natural allies for our cause. These are all amazing and good developments, for the Church has always been one of the pillars of power that supports the oligarch's reign. Give my thanks to your most esteemed and holy friend. And tell him to keep his head down. They are looking for him.

But alas, as much as I miss you, my sweet, and as much as I could talk for hours on the politics of my fair and troubled city, I must be brief and finally arrive at the point of this epistle. My love, it has been many weeks since I received an update from my servant Mr. Davies, and I begin to fear for him. Not only was he a great and loyal friend, but as you may have ascertained he was engaged in sensitive and important business for myself and my husband, business which we cannot afford to see go stray. The main purpose of my writing to you is to beg you to ensure that he get in touch with me, as quickly as possible.

We do not have time for the slowness and uncertainty of letters, so I send to you this amulet, blessed by the Loa, if Davies yet lives, please ask him to wear this close to heart when next he sleeps. It will allow him and I to converse. Or if, by great tragedy, something has happened to him, please wear it yourself, so that you may inform me and we may discuss our options. Please do this for me without delay, my love, for time grows short.

Yours in everlasting love and affection
