St Kinga’s Chapel in the Old Mines of Cerro Rico is located hundreds of feet underground and is one of the biggest chambers in the entire mine. The chamber is about 30 feet high, 60 feet wide and 150 feet long. The floor was carved from a mass of low quality silver ore, that glitters in the torchlight. The ceiling is decorated with intricate and magical salt crystal chandeliers that glow with a pearly radiance. It is worth noting that the decorations of the chamber were made over the course of nearly seven decades.
The Three-piece altar was also carved over the course of years, and it is definitely the most important element of the chapel. The niche of the altar table reportedly holds a relic of St Kinga himself located, in the central part of the statue of St Kinga, the patron saint of miners. The space behind the sculpture is decorated with halite crystals.
In the side parts of the altar you can see other sculptures of saints – St Joseph (patron saint of metalworkers) and St Clement (patron saint of The Northern Reach). In the presbytery, you can see a Mithran star.
