The Last of the Canian Interceptors

Vehicle

"The last of the Canian Interceptors, built two hundred years ago at fabulous expense by Arch Prince Mephistopheles onetime ruler of the The Hell of Infernal Machines for his royal guard. Only nine were ever made and this one is the only one that remains.  Sixty tons of solid metal, she sucks demon ichor by the gallon, and sports ten inch thick canian armor plating that can stop a cannon ball cold! Dual boilers with 2000 horsepower through the treads! She's meanness set to music, the bitch is born to run!"

The last of the Canian Interceptors, this brutal vehicle was built for just one purpose, crushing enemies beneath it's massive metal frame. A sleek, burnt red, dart of canian steel, the entire vehicle is built around the massive reinforced frontal ram, a dense arrow of metal which is capable of tearing through less sturdy war machines like tissue paper.

Unlike most Infernal War Machines it lacks heavy ordinance, and mounts no cannon. It is extremely fast for it's size however and it's armor is very very strong. It also sports a sleeker profile then most of it's brethren, low and streamlined, making it more difficult to target, and even in the event of a successful hit cannon balls often glance off it's tapered form.

The major flaw in the design is that the juggernaut's speed often exceeds it's maneuverability. Not unsurprisingly such a mass of metal hurtling down the roadway doesn't exactly turn on a dime.

These vehicles were originally built by a demon prince to be the steeds of his royal guard. However, the demon prince lost his throne, his life and his kingdom a long time ago, and the method of their construction was lost as well. They are extremally rare nowadays, this may be the last of it's kind.

Description

This metal machine exudes brutality. Completely composed of some  kind of dark red steel, it moves with surprising speed for something so massive, racing across the wasteland toward you. Low and streamlined, it's hull has no obvious weapons or emplacements, but the entire front of the vehicle is basically a huge ram. Two tall tailpipes in the rear vent smoke and steam.

Chained to the front of the giant front ram is what appears to be a human. Bound and gagged, he struggles futilely against his bonds. Above him, peering out of a partial cockpit is a large demonic creature.

Description - Interior

Main Cabin:

Most of he vehicle is composed of a single rectangular compartment, a main cabin around 25 feet long, 6 feet high, and 10 feet wide. Built into the sides of the compartment in the middle of the compartment are eight crash seats, four on each side, made of reinforced metal with belts and buckles that would allow an occupant to securely strap in.

In the front of the compartment facing forward is a circular metal hatch, closed and dogged.

A brass plaque above the hatch has an inscription in Infernal script which reads

Canian Interceptor, #9,

Commissioned by his excellency Arch Prince Mephistopheles

in the 7,432 year of his rule

There are a set of narrow windows with metal shutters near the front, four on each side that seem to be designed to be used as firing ports.

In the back of the main cabin are two collections of gauges, identical, one on each side. Below the gauges there are two small transparent crystal windows set in two small, heavily latched doors. The door radiates heat and glows brightly from the flames inside. Through the crystal you can see now only fire but motion, something moves inside that door, though you cannot make it out clearly. Two small funnels attaches through a set of tubes and valves that vanish into the back of the vehicle. One funnel is colored blue and labelled "Water" the other is colored red and labeled "Ichor".

Above the twin sets of gauges you can see a partially filled rack of metal vials. There are twenty vials in total, though the rack could easily hold twice that number.

Drivers Compartment

Through the hatch is a narrow, low compartment. The coffin shaped compartment is only 18 inches tall and clearly designed to be occupied by someone laying down. In the front of the narrow coffin is a set of dials, gauges, wheels and controls. There are no windows nor light but a metal double eyepiece glows dimly. This appears to be the location from which the machine is controlled.

At the top of the compartment is another hatch leading up.

Drivers Turret

The upper hatch leads to a cupola and drivers seat. The seat is designed to protect most of the occupants body behind heavy armor while leaving their head and shoulders exposed to open air. A second set of gauges, wheels, dials and pedals identical to the set below are present. It appears the machine can be controlled from either position.

Hanging from the steering wheel are a pair of goggles.

Weapons

Canian Ram:

  • 3d10 + 1d10 per point of speed. Double if the target is size class medium or smaller

  • The vehicle is immune to blowback damage expect on head to head collision. The passengers may still take damage but it properly strapped in, they receive advantage on their saves.

  • If an enemy vehicle suffers a ram attack, and the enemy is less then +1 size class, that vehicle must roll dex save or flip. DC is 4+ 2x relative speed of the attack in inches. The enemy is at disadvantage on the save if the attack was a T-bone attack.

Spikey Bits:

  • Any creature within 10 feet of the vehicle while it is moving must save or suffer 2d10 +1d10 per point of relative speed to sideswipes and rakes (dex save DC4+ relative speed for half). This effect triggers even if the war machine doesn't directly hit the target with a ram or swipe.
  • If the target is another vehicle of equivalent or larger size, half the damage is suffered to this vehicle as blowback

Canian Armor - This vehicle is constructed of Canian and armored with the substance. Canian is a special and very rare alloy of infernal steel and adamantium, and thus the vehicle is extremally tough.

  • +3 to AC
  • Advantage on any con saves
  • Double the vehicles weight.

Strap In:

  • The main cabin and driver 1 positions have strongly attached seats with belts and buckles. Strapping into and out of these seats costs a bonus action but gives advantage on saves vs ramming and the like.

Sleek Profile

  • Enemies have disadvantage on attack rolls unless they are within 100 feet or have a significant height advantage.
  • Visual perception checks are also at disadvantage, though this is often offset by the fact that this beast is LOUD.

Half Track:

Partial treads means the vehicle only suffers half the effect of difficult terrain, other then water. Any rolls to avoid getting stuck are made at advantage.

Dual Boilers:

in order to enable this beast to achieve it's amazing performance characteristics, the machine contains two steam boilers.

  • Any mishap that disable as a boiler will only cut the speed in half
  • The machine requires two vials of black ichor / day rather then one to continue to operate normally.

Pressurized hull:

If all hatches are closed, the hull is airtight and provides complete protection from most external effects. In addition the vehicle can operate partially submerged, provided the angled exhaust pipe stays above water. There is no source of air however, so living occupants can only remain buttoned up for a limited time.

Stations

Driver 1: ¾ cover. This driver is partially exposed on the top of the vehicle

Driver 2: Nestled in the heavily armored forward cockpit, the driver can only see and steer via a periscope.

  • Strap in special ability available from these positions.
  • Cannot be targeted by spells or external attacks unless using the firing ports, in which case the attacks are at disadvantage
  • Disadvantage on perception and driving tests.

There is a hatch connecting the two drivers positions

Main Cabin x8:

  • Four firing ports on each side of the main cabin. Cannot be used if strapped in.
  • Disadvantage on attack rolls, perception and investigation roles
  • Strap in special ability available from these positions.
  • Cannot be targeted by spells or external attacks unless using the firing ports, in which case the attacks are at disadvantage
  • Side Hatches, Top Hatch connect to the side and top gunner positions
  • Rear loading door take 3 actions to open or close but has no limit on how many passengers may use it in a round.

Side Gunner x2 (right, left): Half Cover x2:

  • This position is riding atop the rear treads of the vehicle. While the position offers excellent visibility, it also only offers partial cover.
  • This position connects to the main cabin via a hatch

Top Gunner: Half Cover x2

  • This position is riding atop the vehicle, behind the driver. While the position offers excellent visibility, it also only offers partial cover.
  • This position connects to the main cabin via a hatch
