Introduction to Alchemical Components

A NOTE ON THIS BOOK

It is illegal to own this book. While it doesn't contain any alchemical recipes it will allow the reader to become familiar with some of the more common ingredients or components used in making alchemical concoctions.  

CONCOCTIONS 

Concoctions is a catch-all term for many different alchemical creations. They can be potions, oils, unguents, or any other variety of forms. Often, these terms are used interchangeably in fantasy lore but are rarely defined, so the following terms are provided to aid in this endeavor.

• Elixir: Elixirs are potions specifically designed to recover wounds or prevent wounds from occurring.

• Flask: Flasks are typically breakable containers for concoctions which require an impact to trigger their effect.

• Poison: Poisons are potions specifically designed to inflict wounds or other adverse conditions. They can be ingested (through food or drink), contact (dangerous just from skin contact), injected (such as from fangs or from a poisoned weapon), or gaseous (breathed in) in nature.

• Potion: This is a catch-all term for a magical liquid which is imbibed for its effect.

• Salve: Salves are an ointment designed to recover wounds or prevent wounds from occurring.

• Tonic: Tonics are just another term for elixirs. Like elixirs, they are potions designed for healing, but can also refer to potions which allow one to recover strain.

• Unguent: Unguents are soft, greasy or viscous substances used for a variety of means.

• Vial: Similar to flasks, vials are typically breakable containers for the same reason, but a bit smaller in size than a flask. All other alchemical creations are typically called concoctions, especially if they don’t readily fit under any of the terms above

SOME COMMON COMPONENTS OF ALCHEMY

GILLTERROR SKIN

The Gillterror is a vicious sea-dwelling creature. Its skin is like a grey blubber. Primarily used in magic related to water. Rarity: 6. Measures/Costs: Gillterror Skin is measured in patches (roughly ½ meter, or 1 ½ feet square)/900.

AQUATIC BLOOD

Aquatic Blood can be obtained from any supernatural (not a standard animal eligible for the Transform spell action) creature with the Aquatic ability. • Uses: Aquatic Blood is primarily used in water magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: It is typically sold by the Vial (60) or Pitcher (240).

AVATHIAN

This rare crystalline herb only grows on some of the highest mountain peaks on the Perches. It is a near translucent herb which almost appears to be frozen. • Uses: Avathian is used to aid in Invisibility. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Avathian is sold by the Sprig/50

BANE SPIDER SILK

Mennara is known to be home to a large variety of dangerous giant arachnids. While most of them produce silk (and their silk can be used as well), that of the Bane Spider is the most prolific and readily available. • Uses: Bane Spider Silk is most often used in magical concoctions and items requiring a sewn component and is used as magical thread. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Bane Spider Silk is sold by the Strand/60.

BANE SPIDER VENOM

In addition to its silk, the acidic venom of the Bane Spider is also widely used in alchemy. • Uses: Bane Spider Venom is often used in concoctions where acid is required. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Bane Spider Venom is sold by A Few Drops (60), a Vial (180), or a Pitcher (720).

BARBARIAN BLOOD

While called Barbarian Blood, it is really blood from any creature with a rage-like ability. • Uses: It is used for endurance magic, ignoring pain, or rage-like effects. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: Barbarian Blood is sold by A Few Drops (10), a Vial (50), or a Pitcher (200).

BARD/DIPLOMAT TONGUE

Like many components, this is literal. This is the tongue of a Bard or Diplomat. • Uses: It is often used for charm magic or other social magic • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: 1 Tongue 700. BEAR BLOOD This blood can be from any variety of bear. • Uses: It is often used for stamina magic. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: Bear Blood is sold by A Few Drops (15), a Vial (50), or a Pitcher (200). BEE VENOM This venom requires a large number of bees to cultivate. • Uses: It is often used in magic affecting insects or duplicating insect-like effects. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: Bee Venom is sold by A Few Drops (60), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (400).

SIRIN BLOOD

This blood can be from any type of Sirin • Uses: It is used for Flying magic. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Blood is sold by A Drop (100), A Few Drops (600), a Vial (1000), or a Pitcher (5000).

BLOOD: MAGICAL CREATURE

This blood can be from any creature which is not normally a natural animal (as defined in the Transform spell action in the EXPANDED PLAYERS’ GUIDE). • Uses: It is often used just for magical energy in general usage. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Blood is sold by A Few Drops (600), a Vial (1000), or a Pitcher (5000).

BOTTLED SONG OF A SIREN

A captured Siren Song can be used in a lot of social magic. Sirens are rare and of course, their songs are dangerous to capture without being lured to one’s doom. • Uses: It is used most often in charm and social magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: Bottle 1600.

ELVES BRANCH

This branch must be freely given, so it is most often used in Elf magic, as they are typically the only beings this trusted. • Uses: It is used most often in plant-affecting magic. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: Sprig (500), Branch (5000).

BROODLING SILK

This silk comes from the Broodling worms. • Uses: It is mostly used in making healing bandages. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: A Pinch of Strands 100.

KAYBAR FEATHER

The Kaybar is the most prized Sirin. • Uses: Petrification or stone magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: 1 Feather 500.

DWARF SNOW WINE

These fine vintages are made by the dwarfs using vines that grow in icy climbs • Uses: It is used most often in flavor magic and in alchemical alcoholic concoctions. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: These vintages are sold by A Drop (50), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (500), or a Bottle (2000). Yes, this is the ale of kings and wine of queens.

SERIAL KILLER BLOOD

A sadist  must have killed at least three people and taken pleasure in it. • Uses: This blood is often used for magical power in general, curse magic, or other dark concoctions. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Killer Blood is sold by A Drop (50), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (700), or a Pitcher (2500).

DEURG ORE

This rare ore is sometimes found in the mines in Albasa or on the Perches.• Uses: This ore is most often used in magic which affects metal or curse magic. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: Pinch of Powdered Ore 500

FIRE FAN LIZARD

Magically infused fan lizards still sometimes emerge • Uses: It is used in Fire magic and for power. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: Dragon Blood is sold by A Drop (300), A Few Drops (800), a Vial (2500), or a Pitcher (10,000).

FIRE FAN LIZARD

Fire Fan Lizard Phlegm is a bit easier to collect than Fire Fan Lizard Blood. It is often left as a residue when a lizard breathes fire, and it can be collected long afterwards. • Uses: It is often used in Fire magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: Lizard Phlegm is sold by A Drop (20), A Few Drops (50), a Vial (300), or a Pitcher (1000).

FIRE FAN LIZARD SCALE

These scales are often from the smaller scaled parts of a lizard, such as claws. • Uses: They are often used in protection magic and for power. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: 1 Scale (300), A Few Scales (1000)

DESERT DUST FROM TRIBAL LANDS

This sand is collected from the vast dunes of the deserts of the Tribal Lands. Though an import, it is easily collected. • Uses: It is usually used in desiccation magic (removing water). • Rarity: 3 • Measures/Costs: A Pinch of the Dust costs 25.

DWARF BLOOD

Like other humanoid blood, this is often freely sold to alchemist suppliers by those a bit down on their luck, versus harvested from corpses (as local law enforcement tends to frown on such practices). • Uses: It is often used to counter the effects of alcohol or poison. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Dwarf Blood is sold by A Few Drops (10), a Vial (50), or a Pitcher (200).

ECTOPLASM

Ectoplasm is a gooey residue left when a spectral being passes through a solid object (or person). • Uses: It is usually used in Necromancy and dimensional magic • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: A Vial of Ectoplasm costs 600

ECTOPLASM (ELVEN GHOST)

Ectoplasm from an Elven Ghost is a common component in Elvish magical items and concoctions. It is a way a deceased Elf can still contribute to the success and safety of their people. • Uses: This substance is most often used in specifically Elven magical items and concoctions. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: A Few Drops (500), A Vial (2000)

ELEMENTAL AIR

Elemental Air is one of the more fundamental components of a variety of alchemical concoctions. While it is air from the Elemental Plane of Air, it can also be collected from Air Elementals (which is often where it is obtained). • Uses: Elemental Air has a variety of uses in concoctions which are gaseous in nature or aiding in Invisibility. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: A Puff of Elemental Air costs 150.

ELF’S TEARS

Elves are known for their stoicism. Perhaps not nearly to the level of Dwarves, but few beings alive have seen an Elf cry. Because of this, this substance is rare and expensive. • Uses: They are used in Elven magic. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: Elf Tears are sold by A Drop (200), A Few Drops (500), or A Vial (2000)

ELVEN TRUELIGHT GEM

Larger versions of these gems are used in magical lanterns and elf film projectors, but the smaller ones are often used in light magic. • Uses: They are used in magic involving light. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: 1 Small Gem is 200.

ELVEN WRAPROOT

Larger specimens are used to make living, Elven armor. However, smaller sprigs are often used in plant-based magic. • Uses: It is often used in plant-based and preserving magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: A Sprig costs 200.

ESSENCE: DJINN OR EFREET

Unlike most essences, this is not collected upon death. Instead, it is simply a vial of these beings’ gaseous body portions. • Uses: This is often used in Mask spell-like magic and other illusion magic. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: A Vial is 500.

ESSENCE: DWARF

The essence of a dying Dwarf is often used to help power Dwarven magical items or substances. Its rarity is due to the fact it must be freely given by the deceased (and of course, due to the otherwise long lifespan of this species). • Uses: It is used in Dwarven magic. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: 500

ESSENCE: ELF

The essence of a dying Elf is often used to help power Elven magical items or substances. Its rarity is due to the fact it must be freely given by the deceased (and of course, due to the otherwise long lifespan of this species). • Uses: It is used in Elven magic. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: 500

ESSENCE: WRAITH

The essence of a Wraith is collected at the time of the undead’s “final death”. While often easy to locate, the hazards involved in obtaining it means vendors often charge a premium for the component. • Uses: It is used in Necromancy and Stun magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: A Vial is 1000.

EXTRA-PLANAR ICHOR

Extra-Planar Ichor is simple ichor from a creature who is not native to our plane of existence. • Uses: This is used in dimensional magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: Ichor is sold by A Drop (50), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (600), or a Pitcher (1000).

EYE OF A CREATURE WITH DARK VISION

These eyes can be from any creature which had the ability of Dark Vision (because they obviously don’t have the ability anymore). • Uses: These are used for Dark Vision magic. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: 1 Eye (300) or a Pair of Eyes (500)

GOBLIN WARLOCK BLOOD

The blood of a Goblin Warlock is inherently magical. • Uses: It is used for magical energy and luck magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Fae Blood is sold by A Drop (50), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (500), or a Pitcher (2000).

HAMON GOBLIN BLOOD

The blood of the Goblins of the Hamon clan is often used in a variety of bloodrelated magic. • Uses: It is used in blood-related magic. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Ferrox Blood is sold by A Drop (10), A Few Drops (25), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (350).

FLAIL SNAIL MUCUS

These large snails of the deep swamp and their mucus trails are found in the deep swamp and harvested by alchemists. • Uses: It is mostly used as a glue-like substance. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Mucus is sold by A Drop (50), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (300), or a Pitcher (1000).

FLARE CRYSTAL

Full flare crystals are often cultivated for use as a one-time teleportation item. However, they can also be used in alchemical concoctions. • Uses: It is used in dimensional and Move magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: A Pinch of Powdered Flare Crystal (300), 1 Crystal (3000).

FOUNTAIN OF PURITY WATER

The Fountain of Purity is a holy site that pilgrims visit in Mixha. Magical Elven fountain’s waters have magical properties. Since the magic ban tourists have been forbidden from visiting the site. Its rarity and cost reflect how it is only available from Elves who have managed to smuggle some out of the empire. • Uses: It is used in Elven magic and purifying magic. • Rarity: 8 • Measures/Costs: Water is sold by A Drop (200), A Few Drops (500), a Vial (1000), or a Pitcher (3000).

GIANT INSECT ICHOR

While Giant Insect Ichor can be used in any concoction calling for normal ichor, it is a little more expensive and has other uses. • Uses: It is primarily used in protection magic. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Ichor is sold by A Few Drops (50), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (500). GIANT INSECT LEGS Giant Insect Legs can be from a variety of such bugs. They are detailed more fully in the ZOWA ZOOLOGY: PART 2 supplement. • Uses: They are used primarily in jumping or transport magic. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: 1 Leg (600), 2 Legs (1000).

GIANT’S BLOOD

The blood of giants is used for power and strength magic. Their large size means a single giant provides quite a bit of this resource. • Uses: It is used for power and strength magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Giant’s Blood is sold by A Drop (70), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (500), or a Pitcher (2000).

GILLS OF AN AQUATIC CREATURE

These gills can be from any creature with the Aquatic ability which is not normally a natural animal (as defined in the Transform spell action in the EXPANDED PLAYERS’ GUIDE). • Uses: It is used almost exclusively for water breathing magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Gills 1000.

HOUSE SPRITES HAIRS

Their magical use is rather specific but then so are these sprites. • Uses: It is used exclusively in Itching Powder. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: A Pinch of House Sprite Hairs is 25.

GRAVE DIRT FROM A HERO

Grave dirt from a hero’s grave may be illegal in some cities. However, in nearby villages or the next city over, it is not a hard substance to find. • Uses: It is used for magical power. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: A Pinch of this Grave Dirt is 70.

HOLY WATER

Standard Holy Water is simply water which has been Blessed by someone with at least one rank in Divine magic. The Holiest Holy Water has been Blessed by the highestranking priest of that particular faith and is far more rare and expensive. • Uses: It is used to make Holy concoctions and items, as well as for purification. • Rarity: Standard (4), Holiest (8). • Measures/Costs: Standard Holy Water is sold by Vial (50), or a Pitcher (200). Holiest Water is only sold by the Vial 900.

ICEBLOOD

Ice-blooded creatures are native to the frozen wastes. Creatures like the Ice Wyrms vital fluids remain perpetually cold and are often used by alchemists. • Uses: It is used in cold magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Iceblood is sold by A Drop (50), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (200), or a Pitcher (600).

ICHOR

Standard Ichor has many uses in a variety of alchemical concoctions. It is typically distilled from the body fluids of hundreds of insects and is very labor-intensive. • Uses: Ichor is used as a conduit for magical energy. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: Ichor is sold by A Drop (20), A Few Drops (40), a Vial (200), or a Pitcher (800).

SNAKES BLOOD

Snakes blood is often overlooked by adventurers who encounter them. However, the substance can be useful to alchemists. • Uses: snakes blood is used in stealth-related magic. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: snakes Blood is sold by A Drop (20), A Few Drops (50), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (400).

SWAMP LILY FLOWER

Grown in the swamps and used in the manufacture of certain drugs and often smoked for pleasure. • Uses: Sleep and healing magic.  • Rarity 3 Measures/Costs: Sold in grams 5g = 40. 

KRAKEN INK

Most biological inks are used in magical writings or darkness magic, and Kraken ink is no exception. The one saving grace is a Kraken is very large and a harvest can net enough of the substance to keep it more readily available to alchemists. • Uses: It is used in magical writings and darkness magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Ink is sold by A Drop (20), A Few Drops (50), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (800).

LENGTH OF DJINN CHAIN

The palaces of the Djinn can often be found in ruins under the sands of the Tribal Lands. These chains were used to keep powerful beings captive during the rule of the Djinn. A Length of this chain is approximately 3 links and a meter long. To use it in alchemy, it must be melted down in an extremely hot furnace. Once it gets to the proper heat, it drastically reduces in size, undoing the sizing magic used by the Djinn, and releasing that magical energy for the concoction. • Uses: It is often used in Fire and dimensional magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: 1 Length is 2500.

CAREL FIRE

Although already an alchemical substance, it also is used in other fire-related concoctions. Some of Carel’s largest ships have projectors mounted which mix the substance with oil to send a stream of fire towards enemy ships. • Uses: Carel Fire is often a less expensive solution for Fire magic than fire fan lizard parts. • Rarity: 5 • Measures/Costs: Carel Fire is sold in A Vial (50), or a Flask (100).

MIND WORM ICHOR

The Mind Worm is a strange creature found in the deep swamp. Its ichor can be used in a rather unique way. • Uses: It is used for illusion and social magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: Ichor is sold by A Drop (100), A Few Drops (250), a Vial (500), or a Pitcher (2000).

MISTVINE SEEDS

Mistvine is one of many varieties of carnivorous plants found in the Deep Swamp. Its seeds are highly-prized by alchemists. • Uses: These seeds are often used in various magicimbued dolls and fetishes. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: The seeds are typically sold by the ½ pound (or 227 grams) for 60.

GREEN FROG MUSK

Can be found in the swamp. Their musk is prized as a powerful insect repellent. • Uses: It is used in insect repellent and jumping magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Musk is sold by A Few Drops (50), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (500).

OCTOPUS INK

Octopus Ink is used for the same purposes as Kraken ink, but it is a cheaper alternative. • Uses: It is used in magical writings and darkness magic. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: Ink is sold by A Drop (10), A Few Drops (25), a Vial (50), or a Pitcher (100).

WIND HEAD BLOOD

The regenerative powers of the Wind Heads (People who live on the mountain peaks) are legendary, and they are extremely valuable to alchemists. • Uses: Wind Heads blood is used for healing and regeneration magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Wind Heads Blood is sold by A Drop (10), A Few Drops (60), a Vial (200), or a Pitcher (800).

WIND HEADS HEART

Like an Wind Heads blood, their hearts can be used for the same magical properties, but the heart itself is often used in more permanent regenerative items or extremely potent concoctions. • Uses: It is used in regeneration and healing magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: 1 Heart is 2500.

ORC BLOOD

Orc blood is used in many of the same ways as Barbarian blood. • Uses: It is used in rage magic. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: A Few Drops (40), a Vial (80), or a Pitcher (800).

JOLO PERAL

Jolo Pearls are smaller versions of the larger lights the Priests of Jolo make for large cities. These small, luminescent stones still emit a lot of light. • Uses: These stones are used in magic involving light. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: 1 Pearl costs 200.

CHARN BLOOD

These enormous birds of prey are sometimes used as aerial mounts. • Uses: Charn blood is used in Flying magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Roc Blood is sold by A Drop (100), A Few Drops (300), a Vial (800)

ROYAL BLOOD

To qualify, the donor must be someone with a title of Count or higher rank within their nation. It is often sold to alchemist suppliers by unscrupulous servants who gain the substance in a variety of ways. • Uses: Royal blood is used as magical power. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Royal Blood is sold by A Drop (200), A Few Drops (400), a Vial (900).

SABRECAT BLOOD

The Sabrecat is a quick feline detailed in the Farm Lands of Albasa State. • Uses: Its blood is often used in speed magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Sabrecat Blood is sold by A Drop (20), A Few Drops (50), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (500).

SCRAP FROM AN ROBOT

These automatons served the Kalhom Empire towards the end and one or two are still employed in menial tasks in the new state • Uses: This scrap is used in animation magic and protection magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: A Handful of Scrap is 1400.

SHADOWLURKER SPIDER SILK

The razor-sharp strands of silk from Shadowlurker Spiders is a key component for any concoction involving Invisibility. • Uses: This silk is used to aid in Mask spell-like abilities or Invisibility. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: A Strand costs (100), a Few Strands (300).

SMALL CRYSTAL

Small crystals are often used to store magical energy. Once stored, ground crystals can be used to power magical concoctions. • Uses: Used as magical energy. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: 1 Crystal is 100.

NATURE SPRITE ICHOR

The ichor of a Nature Sprite is often used as a magical dehydrator. It is the primary way alchemists reduce some ingredients to a powder form. • Uses: It is used for dehydration. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Ichor is sold by A Drop (30), A Few Drops (100), a Vial (200), or a Pitcher (800).

STARSTONE POWDER

Starstone is the rare blue and black stone which is found in the mountains of Mesassa. It is a key component for permanent magical items. • Uses: Starstone powder is used to give a concoction magical power. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: A Pinch of Powdered Starstone is 100.

STONE FROM A GOLEM

Runegolems are mostly legends to current citizens of Albasa. However, in many battlefields of old, remnants of these large defenders can still be found. The stones from these remnants still retain magical energy and are valuable to alchemists. • Uses: The stones are used mostly for protection magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: A Small Stone is 600.

SWAMP BEETLE BLOOD

Swamp Beetles are notoriously reclusive, so their blood is even more difficult to get than other Beetles. • Uses: It is used primarily in water magic and protection magic. • Rarity: 7 • Measures/Costs: Swamp Beetle Blood is sold by A Drop (350), A Few Drops (500), a Vial (2000)

SWORDSMAN’S BLOOD

A Swordsman’s Blood is blood from anyone with at least 3 ranks in a Melee skill. • Uses: It is used in magic swords and in potions designed to improve one’s skill with weapons. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: Swordsman’s Blood is sold by A Drop (20), A Few Drops (60), a Vial (100), or a Pitcher (500).

THERIACA

Theriaca itself is an alchemical concoction originating in Kenvo and often carried by sailors as a cure-all for a variety of ailments. While its success in this role is dubious, the mixture does often serve as a component for more potent alchemical concoctions. • Uses: It is used to make alchemical poison antidotes. • Rarity: 4 • Measures/Costs: Theriaca is sold by A Vial (25), or a Pitcher (100).

RECOND MUSK

Recond are known for their incredible stench. It shouldn’t be surprising their musk is a key ingredient in Stench Bombs and Vomit Powder. • Uses: Stinky substances. • Rarity: 6 Measures/Costs: Musk is sold by A Drop (10), A Few Drops (20), a Vial (50)

VAMPIRE BLOOD

The blood of a Vampire is a potent alchemical substance. • Uses: It is used in strength and damaging magic. • Rarity: 6 • Measures/Costs: Vampire Blood is sold by A Few Drops (100), a Vial (800)

WATER SPRITE ICHOR
