Arcane Rot

A mysterious class of organisms which feed on magic. From what it seems, Arcane Rot has been around for as long as magic has been used, appearing where magic is used in excess.

Arcane Rot is rather resilient, and can survive for a thousand years without a source of magic to feed on. However, it cannot spread and it is not infectious without magic.

Attacking the rot by physical means seems to do little other than create a mess. Starving the rot from magic is the only known way to combat it.

Reproduction

There are two known ways that Arcane Rot can reproduce.

The first method is asexually, where the rot simply spreads on its own where there is an ample source of magic. One can split a rot "eye" in half to trigger this process manually.

The second method is through the "Bloom", a rare event where the Arcane Rot will retain all of it's magic until it can reach the surface and spread billions of spores in the air, reaching large distances to find other Arcane Rot to exchange genetic material. This is how the The Rot Tower was created in Yew Nork City.

Species

There are several species of Arcane Rot, the following are the ones that are currently known:

Wild Arcane Rot: the dominant and natural variant of Arcane Rot.

Bonaparte's Domesticated Rot: a fragile breed, selectively bred to absorb magic and not infect people. In The Tea Party there is a chamber that Bonaparte can flood with domesticated rot to cure an infected person by absorbing all magic within them. For some people who are kept alive only by magic, this process can be fatal.
