You can attune to an item as an action (or 6 seconds) unless the item has some alternate attunement condition, and it takes ten minutes to break attunement, either through physical separation or willing bestowment.
Furthermore, the following items no longer require attunement:
1) Ring of Protection (see PROPER protection)
