The most often spoken languages of the Nine Hells are common, undercommon, and Infernal. For some complications, Abyssal would also be an uncommonly learned language. The true voice of the damned would be the different castes of infernal.
The Infernal language is divided into four different tiers in what is known as the "Caste of Order." The castes of orders are four separate tiers in which Infernal can be portrayed and are used for wildly different situations. The words of each caste carry with it different meaning and powers which are also reflected in the speaker's tone.
- The Caste of Demand - words in this caste are unexpectant shouted as even the speaker can whisper any such words but the actual sounds come out booming as if under a thaumaturgical boost. This is used predominantly by Spine Devils to give orders to combatants across battlefields.
- The Caste of Debate - This speaking tier is most often used, most sentient creatures that speak Infernal use this. It is somewhat equivalent to common & undercommon in its complexity and wide range of use as it is pronounced - it shies away from the harsh gravelly tones of Demand - coming across more poetically.
- The Caste of Deceit - More structured, rigid - yet rhythmic, is used by higher devils and most infernal creatures that have done bargaining or contracts with all manner of intellectual creatures. Speaking it properly required much more thought & planning, as well as a sharp wit to respond to phrases that the other person would be saying to show understanding & insight. It is said that the most successful of devils are able to hold entire conversations in which one would only BEGIN a sentence - yet the other would pick up with a new sentence and still understand what is being said. This makes it very tricky for most mortals to fully comprehend, as subtext & body language play as much a part as knowledge and etymology.
- The Caste of Despair - Only used in the courts of Pit Fiends & Archdevils. This tier of language diverts HEAVILY from the other sounds of previous castes. Each word on this tier is so utterly corrupt and evil that even whispering these syllables would drag so much malevolence & despair out of those that listen to it. Enough to drive lesser people mad. It is said that each word holds a corrupt tinge of some of the original languages, but rarely would an Archdevil even deign to describe what each word could mean in the common tongue.
