Magic is particularly common here compared to other places, around 1 in 100 people. Whether it's because of geographic location or genetics is unknown, but it seems like people in this region seem to be able to bond with crystals readily. Perhaps the proximity to the fae has something to do with it. Magic is seen as a tricky and whimsical thing, something to be wary of.
Though the fae can't use the stones, they delight in humans that can. Most stones in Hybornia were once in the possession of the fae. Sometimes a person will wake up in the woods not remembering how they got there, and suddenly they are a mage.
