This is all suspected to be strictly myth, but they say that two of the Elondhi, the gods that created the elves, took interest in the way the Aegi were formed with inspiration from animals. One of them was Nivian, the god of loyalty and family, often associated with hunting and providers. The other was Neremyn, the goddess of independence and good fortune, often associated with playfulness and joy.
Seeing the wolf as an animal with excellent qualities that anyone would embody, Nivian took the pelts of wolves and bestowed them on some of his followers, giving them the ability to shapechange into a wolf whenever they were illuminated by the blue light of katergis. Similarly, Neremyn gifted her followers with the pelts of foxes that allowed them to change their shape in the pink light of Synigora. Thus, the twins brought the werewolves and the kitsune into existence.
But this is all here-say. Everyone knows that the Aegi were created by the Azimh Teb as a “rough draft” for intelligent souls, and that the Elondhi did a much better job with the elves… to combine elves with animal traits would surely be a step backward! Anyway!
They say these pelts still exist to this day. They say there are cults that keep them. They say the pelts can bond with the mind, body, and soul of a mortal who dons it, resulting in a being with two minds in one, sometimes harmonizing in heart and thoughts, other times vying for control. They say some can change at will, and some are bound by the moonlight.
And they also say that the werewolf and the kitsune don’t exist… that none of this is true.
