Bliss's family had very minor connections to the Kalmoran court during Muzhaved's reign. When she was barely in her teens, her brother brought her before Thorben to trade her as a concubine for a benefit. Thorben thought that was real gross but took sympathy for the girl's plight and gave her to Mhissain for protection.
This put Bliss in an incredibly unique position during the remainder of Muzhaved's life. She was the only person in the palace who was specifically in Mhissain's harem rather than being a Koyan servant with more rights, or one of the Derebey's servants on loan to her. This gave Bliss immense power in the zenana as she was near to Mhis's age, had no higher obligations to the Derebey, and was able to earn favor from the Kizyuisi so that she could leave the zenana unveiled like a Koyan woman and accompany Mhissain on many events the Derebey's Padshah Begum could not attend due to custom.
Now that the old Derebey has died, Bliss's power is more tenuous. Mhissain has allowed the old Padshah Begum to retain her title out of respect for the woman she considers a grandmother and because of the argument that Bliss is not a true zenana member due to her willingness to leave unveiled. Also, while Bliss is confident in her status as a romantic interest of the Kizyuisi's, Mhissain refuses to touch her due to what she claims are dubious consent issues. This was fine when no other zenana woman could dare catch the Kizyuisi's attention while the old Derebey still lived, but now he is gone and Mhissain only needs to say yes one time. Bliss absolutely hates Isobel Mauslon for being Mhissain's lover.
Bliss was discovered to be a wild psionic talent and has been trying to learn to hone her talents while not being allowed to enter Koyo Isu where the true schools lay.
