I am the Sage Valhalmet. And first off let me clarify something that should be common knowledge by now.
Dragons don't worship anything. Gods are for the lesser beings. While they may respect those powers and entities that have reached godlike status, they know deep within their heart and minds, that they could accomplish the same. They might, should it please them, associate with a religion, partner with a temple for mutual benefit, share some philosophies with a religion, or even lead one, but they will not be a "follower".
Occasionally, dragons develop a sense known as dragonsight—an awareness of multiple incarnations of themselves across different worlds of the cosmos. Dragonsight is most common in ancient dragons, especially when their enormous hoards include items from other worlds or powerful artifacts whose histories span multiple worlds.
Dragons who develop dragonsight amass knowledge that spans the cosmos, making them among the foremost experts on worlds beyond their own. With time, dragonsight can expand beyond passive awareness to allow active communication between a dragon’s incarnations. Some ancient dragons with well-developed dragonsight begin to weave grand plans that involve coordinating activities across multiple worlds, culminating in cosmos-shaking events. Some dragons theorize that this is their path to self-godhood.
So, keep in mind, many of the various religions and philosophies I will discuss will be from the viewpoint of the mortal followers.
We shall begin the the obvious; The Temple of Tiamat, the Church of Bahamut, and the Draconic Dogma.
Draconic Dogma
One of the oldest known faiths in existence, the Draconic Dogma is the belief that three great draconic powers created and protect the cosmos. The faith itself is fading, and more often than not all you hear about are the individual faiths of Tiamat , and Bahamut. Very little is known about the third member of Dogma, Shekinester, a legendary primordial power of neutrality
Individually the goals and motivations of the three great dragon powers, Tiamat, Shekinester, and Bahamut, vary greatly and often come into conflict with each other. The one thing they all agree on is their right and responsibility to guard, protect, maintain, and/or rule the world/cosmos.
As such, they are the eternal foes of the Void, Entropy, and other forces/beings that would destroy the cosmos and return it to the nothingness which existed before creation.
Battles between the forces of Tiamat, and Bahamut and his champions are legendary. It is said that several times Tiamat has been defeated and driven back into the chaos of the beginning, but there is never a killing blow, and she always returns in some fashion. One of the more legendary stories tells how Bahamut and Marduk cast a net of winds around Tiamat, and then dismembered her, using her parts to create the seas and mountains of the world. These tales of course are considered specious lies by the followers of Tiamat.
Knights of the Flame
This organization of knights and paladins is led by an ancient dragon called Gazorix Justicarius Rex, The Just King. The Knights of the Flame follow the precepts of order and good, with particular devotion to protecting the common people and righting wrongs. Devotion to this cause allows some members to gain the powers of a paladin, and or a cleric, presumably by following the teachings of Gazorix.
Does this make the Just King a god? Their followers certainly act as if they believe this to be the case, but in my opinion I would say not. At least, not yet.
Temple of the Winds
The Temple of the Winds is a unique order of a monastic nature that believes in the balance and orderly functioning of the cosmos, a belief that all things are needed in equal balance or the world would be destroyed. Guided by the Daughters of Ylath; Atroa, Geshtai, Sotillion, and Wenta, elemental/draconic spirits of air and the winds.
There is only one temple/monastary for the Temple of the Winds, and it is located in the southwestern portion of the Free State of Landfall. What is interesting about this faith is the lack of any substantial information on the being known as Ylath, other than them being the father of the "Four Winds". The daughters, although having wind/draconic aspects, are worshiped more like spirits than actual gods.
Furthermore, the name of Ylath appears in lore and legends in the local area of the Aes Draconis sea associated with a little known philosophy/faith known as the Asharian Dragon Spirits.
Asharian Dragon Spirits
Fallen empires abound in the area of the Aes Draconis sea, and much knowledge of their temples and faiths remains forgotten. What we do know, is that the Dragon Spirits are an old philosophy that say the world was created in the conflict between two great primordial dragons, Asha, Dragon of Order, and Urgash, Dragon of Chaos. Despite much research, I cannot find these names in any other context within the world of dragons and gods, other than the common motif of two dragons fighting and creating the world.
What is of note, however, is that "Urgash" seemed to have some demons and fiends on their side of the battle, while Asha and their six children fought alongside the elemental spirits of the world. After the conflict and formation of the world, the two creator dragons faded away, and the six elemental dragons were bound beyond the veil, only able to appear in the world as spirits and visions.
There are no active temple or churches of this faith that I am aware of.
The Cult of Takhisis
Takhisis is either considered a demon or a demigod, either way they are the leader of a fire cult in the far off lands of Zakhara. Some say the cult is nothing but fire mages and bandits, with no power and no standing, but my research has shown a certain deviousness behind their actions, and I would take neither them nor Takhisis lightly.
The Cult of Dragons
The Cult of the Dragons is composed of followers who believe that dragons are the epitome of power and divinity. The Cult acts as an information network for its draconian "masters", bringing gems and riches as offerings, and encouraging mainly neutral and evil dragons to become rulers and dictators. Their belief is that dragons are destined to one day rule the world and beyond.
It is questionable if all the dragon's venerated by the Cult are of godly power, certainly Tiamat is, and possibly Ephelomon and Chronepsis. Regardless, members of the Cult venerate the ideal of these dragons of horrific power, and seek to emulate them in their rise to rulership.
Various Cults, Dragon/Serpent Adjacent Demigods, etc.
There are innumerable cults and factions gathered to venerate, worship, and follow various dragons, and draconic/serpent beasts. Too many to go into detail. As I discover more I will update this appendix a needed, potentially promoting the information to a full chapter should the info unearthed warrant such.
- Yig: semi-draconic/serpent power associated with time, earth, and water.
- Dendar: the Night Serpent, devourer of nightmares and fears.
- Asgorath: the World Serpent, circle of creation.
