A Light In The Fog

This quest is completed.
A call to arms!

Several flyers have been put up around First City, a dire call to action from the nearby village of Otari, south of First City neighbouring The Great Swamp.

A dire threat looms on the horizon that threatens not just the safety of the Otari, but to the Realm as a whole. Near to Otari, a towering monolith has sprouted from the earth, its gnarled roots on the verge of overgrowing all that surround it.

We've been tasked by a local druid, Elora, to investigate the nearby ruins of Gauntlight Keep which has been unearthed by the encroaching roots. Rumours swirl of dark forces stirring within the crumbling walls, whispering of power and peril that invite the brave to seek out hidden mysteries.

Beware, however, for the path ahead is fraught with danger and uncertainty. The ruins of Gauntlight Keep are said to house horrid creatures lost to time and run deep beneath the earth. This may prove a potential route into the heart of the towering tree that now casts its shadow over Otari.

The fate of Otari, and possibly the entire Falanar coast, may hang in the balance.

Observations On Gauntlight Keep

Before me lies a scene that inspires both awe and dread in equal measure. This towering tree casts a shadow over Otari, the gnarled roots threatening the perimeter of the village even now. They sprawl out from the tree like serpents in relentless advance, crushing anything that gets in the way.

Though never a proud sight, the swamped ruins of Gauntlight Keep now stand besieged by the roots, the walls and battlements broken and battered by nature's fury. The crumbling stones and shattered wood, I hope, are not a fate that Otari will share. The inexorable growth of the tree must have a source, but even to approach it would be a feat of daring, let alone to climb it.

A stillness hangs heavy in the air. There is an unnerving silence in the area that wasn't there before, as if even the bugs had fled. The only thing that breaks the eerie mood is the oft startling fall of stonework from the crumbling ruins, not a good trade-off if you ask me.

I swear, dark forces yet linger in the keep, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. Some of the villagers have said they hear sounds coming from the late at night, scratching and shuffling, wailing and moaning, or other foul sounds no one wants to hear.

With the report is an attached sketch.

The ruins of Gauntlight Keep have been visibly shifted, slanted walls and old construction now barely stopped from being fully submerged in the surrounding swamp. The center structure seems intact if only by the luck of a nearby root travelling the other direction. The massive tree looms in the background, obscured by the fog so heavily that the canopy can not be seen.
