A quiet herbalist and record-keeper in Caramendra, Lyren lives in the shadow of a broken keep and an older story. She grew up on her 2nd-great-grandfather Serelion Thalen's tales of a veiled moon, fractured oaths, and a love stronger than silence.
“Ariandi died before I was born, but Serelion spoke of her often.
Said she was a songbird in the dead of night.
That they should’ve forgotten each other, but didn’t. Wouldn’t. That’s how he said it.
‘We remembered on purpose.’
They weren’t supposed to. Whatever they saw, the Stewards... and later, the Watchers, demanded silence.”
“I'm told he changed after Ariandi died.
That he got quieter, distant.
That his voice tightened when he spoke of the Watchers, or whatever they call themselves now.
That he’d go out at night and walk the ridge alone, staring at the sky like it owed him something.”
