The forest's whispers turned sinister as twilight painted the sky. Spoon, his goblin mind buzzing with alchemical schemes, sought my knowledge of local poisons. Goblinvine Oil, a potent nausea inducer, was our chosen weapon. My suggestion of Azure Lily pollen for a debilitating cloud was met with manic glee.
Cassius, bless his brute strength, located a Goblinvine tree. The elusive lilies, however, remained just out of reach. Rip, ever the optimist (or idiot), swore he'd find them. With the fading light, we resolved to gather more vines at dawn, splitting into teams: myself, Cassius, and the unpredictable Rip versus Spoon, Gornak, and the wide-eyed newcomer, John.
The first watch, uneventful, gave way to Cassius' turn. I drifted off, only to be jolted awake by a bone-rattling thud. A hulking shadow, all growls and claws, stalked Cassius, who hurled a mysterious object into the darkness. The beast retreated, only to return moments later, dropping a ball at my feet. A bear? Playing fetch? As it lunged for my bedroll, I flung the ball, scrambling for the dubious safety of the wagon.
This furry fiend had a one-track mind. Again it came, ball in mouth, a canine grin on its face. This time, it dragged Rip and John into the spectacle. Rip, clutching the ball like a lifeline, was subjected to a slobbery face-washing as the bear demanded its toy back.
With a defeated whimper, Rip relinquished the prize, only to receive a nose-shattering 'thank you' from the bear. Gornak, ever the pragmatist, snatched the ball and launched it into the woods, where John, apparently immune to self-preservation, intercepted it.
The ensuing chase faded into the distance, John's victorious cries signaling the bear's defeat. Exhaustion won out, and Spoon and I collapsed back into our bedrolls. The forest's silence felt ominous, broken only by Rip's complaints about his newly-crooked nose and his delusional ramblings about "ripening" cattails. Truly, we were a band of misfits, stumbling blindly through the night, our only solace the promise of chaos yet to come.
