The mercenary known as Kaedrick de Vanion has arrived in the New World with nothing but his tools of war and the stories he tells about himself. As a child, Kaedrick grew up without a surname amongst the tents and ships of the Whalebone Reavers, a disreputable and unscrupulous band of mercenaries that travelled the icy coasts of the north. The stories of his exploits beyond this are conflicting and varied, many untrue.

Regardless of what the real truth is, Kaedrick claims that he is the lost son of the noble de Vanion house, an ancient lineage fallen into obscurity after a civil war. His one piece of evidence for this claim is a signet ring of the house, just as easily gifted to him by a mother fleeing the knives of revolutionaries as it would be looted from the body of an erstwhile noble.

Kaedrick now seeks to restore his noble status he believes he is owed, and is more than willing to tread over others to reach this goal. Despite his viciousness in battle, Kaedrick is a man with many fears. He fears that somewhere out there is a ‘true’ descendant of the de Vanion line who will put to rest the question of if his claim is valid or not. He fears that members of the Whalebone Reavers will chase him to the new world in search of the sizable amount of gold he stole and subsequently wasted. His greatest fear, however, is to die unremembered, leaving behind no legacy or legend.
