"Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?"
Originally hailing from the Aizan Empire, far to the east, Serokigh Prechak spins many tales of his early days. The son of a courtier in one, adopted urchin in another, even the bastard offspring of the empress herself. It is entirely possible he has told the truth to some unsuspecting inquirer; but in an ocean of tall tales, who is to find the current of veracity?
Though his anecdotes of later life are similarly ever-changing and embellished, the common thread seems to be that he acted as something of an 'alternate solution' in the constant skirmishes and military actions that ebb and flow across the Aizan landscape. Though his services were not cheap, several officers found it convenient to have their opposite numbers incapacitated when the time for a particularly important battle arrived.
To hear him tell it, that was a time of much enjoyment for the irrepressible Tiefling, who found plentiful irony in taking the coin of 'honorable' soldiers to commit the dishonourable acts they could not be seen to be connected with. Matching wits with sentries and servants, he gained a reputation for inventive and eminently deniable work. Eventually, however, one so distinctive could not go unnoticed, and several of his stories feature hair-raising escapes only a few steps ahead of a vengeful army.
Reports of a person matching his description have since cropped up in a multitude of places over the intervening years - almost always connected with some unfortunate losing love, life or livelihood. If they are to be believed, he seems to have made no shortage of money...and enemies.
