Carantus was born in the harsh pastoral tundra in the northern tribes of Atesios. His people, while natural warrior, spent the majority of their time raising livestock while traveling to whatever grazeable track of land they could hunt down. The tribes were a disparate kingdom with little unity until the Empire of Sertorius started to push into their scattered tribal lands from the south under a single leader, Aventina unified them.

Their successes were inspiring as she led them to many triumphant victories. But it was in those victories, as their unified forces managed to halt the enemy at several key locations that old tribal divisions resurfaced. Arguments broke out over spoils of war, battlefield bravery, who deserved credit for their victories. Before long ancestral feuds led to betrayals in hopes of advancing one family’s interest in seeing another fall from grace.

The war ended swiftly after as peace was forced upon his people and in exchange for sovereignty over their lands the first-born children of many prominent houses were forcibly made the wards of military governors of the Empire. They would be raised and taught in their ways and held as hostages to keep the various families in check. Carantus was among them.

He matured in the strict military system of the Sertorius Empire, becoming an accomplished warrior under the watchful tutelage of his surrogate parent and guardian Kaeso Siculus. Life was arduous but fair. The peace eventually disintegrated as a fiery new orator in the north rallied the tribes once again.

He marched with the legions out to the Tundra and on the eve he slipped away to visit the ancient seers, neutral forces who took no sides. He was angry at his family for abandoning him but did not wish to wage war upon them nor did he desire to turn against Kaeso who'd been more of a father to him than his own. The third option given to him was to start his life anew of his own terms. He stepped into The Portal that opened before him.
