02 - Rarity and Unlocks

Rules

Rarity in Pathfinder Second Edition is a system and tool that serves to define our setting, limit the complexity of our games, and keep an even playing field between players as well as make quest rewards much more interesting.

As a general rule, we treat each rarity as follows:

  • Common options are widely available in character creation and easily found as quest rewards or in the Town Shops.
  • Uncommon options are mostly unavailable at character creation, and in town. You can expect to find them as quest loot, and during special events. They can be wishlisted, and some can be obtainable through Regional and Faction Afilliation Access.
  • Rare and Unique are very hard to come by, but they are ocassionally featured during events, and during quest when following a Lead. Do not expect to stumble upon them during play, and wishlisting them does not guarantee you'll get them.

Playing with non-common character options: Access

To be able to choose a non-common option for your character, you will first need Access to them.

General Access

Every character gets Access to some options just by existing in this server's setting. This includes all non-common ancestries, heritages and classes. But also other specific options listed in the General Access List section.

Regional and Faction Affiliation Access (only Uncommon options)

Some options have an Access entry that lists a region from Golarion, or a faction from Golarion's lore. Our concept of the Old World is intentionally kept vague, and we let players draw inspiration for their character's backgrounds, from outside the world of Golarion. Players can interpret and portrait those regions and factions however they want.

As a part of your character's backstory, you may pick a single region and a single faction for the purposes of gaining Access to these options. Your region and faction need not be selected at character creation, but once they are selected they may not be changed.

For example, you can take the Red Mantis Assassin dedication at character creation if you establish that your character is from the Mediogalti Island, and a member of the Red Mantis Assassins. But while they have that feat, they won't be able to gain Access to the Shield Wall feat, or the Courteous Comeback feat, because both have different regional/faction Access entries.

Granted Acess (a.k.a. 'Unlocks')

Sometimes, a GM will grant, as a quest reward, Access to a non-common option. Like a feat, an archetype, or an animal companion. These will be given at the end of a quest through our campaigns%2F42157%2F7dd049ac-b527-4f0e-9312-8781ca18225b.png?webpfallback BtP bot. These are gifted to the player (not only the character), meaning that you get Access to them for any current or future character you play with.

Access vs Rarity

There's an important server rule that gets frequently overlooked:

RARITY DOES NOT CHANGE.

Meaning that feats like Adopted Ancestry, that state: "choose a common ancestry", will not allow you to pick options that are listed as Uncommon (or Rare/Unique) in the Pathfinder Second Edition books. Even if you have Access to them.

General Access List

Every character created in this server has Access to the following non-common options:

Wayfinder (the vanilla version)

Unlocking Rare options

Rare options in a wish list do NOT guarantee you will get access to them. They are very hard to find, but these are different ways you can expect to do it:

Method 1: Random Rare options

Rare options can exceptionally be given during regular missions but you should not expect this to be something common. You may even call it...Rare.

Method 2: Event special reward

During some events, rare options will become available as a special event reward. This does not mean that everyone that participates in the event will receive those options.

Method 3: Leads

Since the previous options are not consistent, we want to empower the players to take risk and reward them by introducing a new system that will enable them to pursue rare or other options. Leads cannot be wish listed.

Receiving a lead

Instead of simple quest rewards, players can sometime find Leads. Leads are given as a end of quest reward to all participants of the quest. Each lead will consist of a Lead Name, the end reward, the expected difficulty and a small description giving the player hints about what they might face if they pursue the lead (see example below).

Pursuing a Lead

In order to pursue a lead, a character must possess the lead and start a special quest. The difficulty of that quest will usually be of a higher level than the average party level.

Leads belongs to player characters and have no monetary value but can be transferred to someone else. By default, you are sharing your lead with all other characters that are going on the special lead quest with you.

Completing a lead

A lead will always name its end reward, that way players know what they are questing for and are guaranteed to receive it when the associated quest(s) have been successfully completed. A lead can be one or multiple quests long.

Each party member taking part in the completion of the lead will have the choice between Unlocking the rare option or receiving the normal bonus XP and/or gold for an above average party level quest.

Once the lead is completed, all other copies of the lead expire and it becomes impossible for other people that received the lead to pursue it.

Non-Rare Leads

In some cases, leads might have a non-rare option as a reward. These leads are a way for players to go on a quest with a guarantee to receive a specific reward. Since the reward is guaranteed, the quest will still be above the average party level.

Example Lead: A meal to die for

Rarity: Rare

Reward: Succubus Kiss Formula

Difficulty: APL+1

You have been tasked with preparing a special meal for Rydess. Hopefully you have found an old recipe that should satisfy the dragon's fine palate, but the ingredients will require some work to gather...
