As most gnomes do, Unque has a powerful drive to experience new things constantly. For him this manifested as an insatiable thirst for knowledge, with a particular predilection for criminal investigations. Unque used this drive to begin publishing a small, mildly successful tabloid where he would share his wild theories behind local mysteries.
When Unque began investigating a series of loosely-related murders, all involving ritualistic scarring of unknown sigils on the victims, his publication rose in popularity and his interest quickly morphed into an obsession.
An old, unassuming tome Unque mysteriously found in his bookcase allowed him to understand the sigils and crack these cases wide open, and for a short while the euphoria of discovery and wild popularity afforded to his tabloid as a result sated his curiosity, but something in the back of Unque's mind told him there was more to it all.
When Unque unavoidably lost himself into the mystery's rabbit hole, he slowly remembered memories that were not his. In doing so he discovered an unsettling truth: he had been the original victim of the murderous creature many years ago, and both Unque and it had lived many lives all leading to the same outcome: insanity, pursuit, murder. That is when the sigils began following Unque everywhere he looked, granting him a spark of divine power just as he begin feeling his grasp on reality slipping away.
Now fearing for his life and his sanity, the gnome abandoned his fame and resolved to not rest until he understands the cycle of violence him and this monster appear to be locked in.
Today, this leads him into the mysterious New World and the settlement known as First Landing.
