Twig’s tribe lived beneath the Verdant Throne, a colossal tree anchoring the Material Plane to the Plane of Wood. The tree served as the seat of Illuthar the Verdant Sovereign, a proud and powerful Kizidhar Shuyookh. Illuthar ruled over the kobolds with disdainful benevolence, finding them insignificant but useful. In exchange for his protection, the kobolds worshipped him as a god, offering intricate wooden carvings and traps to appease their wooden overlord.
Twig’s egg was laid in wood shavings imbued with Illuthar’s essence. Upon hatching, Twig bore bark-like ridges, branch-shaped horns, and the ability to summon timberlings—saplings that grew and toppled instantly. Twig’s tribe valued cunning above strength, but even in this society, the smallest kobolds were often used as bait for predators or adventurers. Most never returned, but Twig thrived. Playing the role of a helpless kobold, he led countless threats into traps or tricked them into lowering their guard before striking.
Twig’s cleverness caught Illuthar’s attention. The Kizidhar summoned him to the Verdant Throne and bound him with an oath of service, promising knowledge and power. However, Illuthar’s true intent was to use Twig as a tool. On a mission to retrieve a magical wooden artifact from a rival genie faction, Twig discovered its potential to grant him freedom. Feigning incompetence, he hid the artifact, intending to use it for himself.
Illuthar was enraged. Stripped of favor and hunted by his tribe, Twig fled, leaving the artifact behind. As Illuthar’s minions pursued him, Twig stumbled upon a mysterious portal. With no other escape, he leaped into the unknown, severing his ties to his old life and Illuthar’s control.
