You sit alone at The Blinking Pug when you hear a distinct voice - dark and deep yet somehow oddly chipper...

"This thing? Well, sure I suppose I would regale you with the tale."

You pause and look around for a moment before you realize that the voice is talking to you. A ysoki in a leather duster is staring into the middle distance, tracing lines on the bear skull he's wearing as a mask with his fingers. You didn't realize that you he had started up a conversation with him (had you?), but it would be rude not to listen to what he has to say.

"This here varmint came into the warren one night. Took the lives of a half dozen of my brother and sisters before he was chased off. Now that, I can't abide. The next morning, I set off with ol' Petunia here and tracked the bastard down to the cave he was holed up in. I was too late to save my kin, but not too late for revenge. I scared it good with a wild shot, and the echoes from the blast sent it running further into the cave. I got it backed up into a corner, the wretched thing was terrified. I walked right up to it, put Petunia's barrel right up between his eyes, and I said 'This is for my family.'"

At this point, other regulars at the pug who are eavesdropping start to snicker a little bit.

"'Course,  dispatching the beat was the easy part. Bringing the body back home was gonna be tricky. I'm much to small to lift that there critter, so I cut off its head with the only tool at my disposal- a dull butter knife. Got it cleaned up hack at my place, and been wearin' it every day since to remind me never to let anybody get the drop on me again."

The ysoki stands up, gestures as if he were tipping a hat, and walks out of the tavern without uttering another word. The snickering eavesdroppers will then banter amongst themselves...

"A cave this time, eh? And the bear didn't even put up a fight!"

"If he shot it between the eyes, why isn't there a hole in the middle of the skull?"

A round of laughs by all. It seems that Dez's story changes every time he tells it, and always to somebody who didn't ask. Is this why he crossed the portal? To gain fame and prestige as an adventurer - one feared and respected for the deeds he's actually accomplished as opposed to those only imagined? Only Dez knows for sure, and he's playing his cards close to the chest.
