Ubukata was born and raised in the sewers and undercity of Goka. Raised in a community of tradespeople, Ubukata learned to become a jeweler.
Occasionally, Ubukata and other younger members of his warren were allowed to go up streetside to sell and buy wares and other goods but most of his time was spent down in the sewers or in the Deepmarket. Here Ubukata learned a couple different languages common to the peoples of Nar-Voth.
Over time, he like most Ratfolk of the city came to learn the winding tunnels and side passages of the subterranean world. Intrinsically, he built up a strong sense of direction and memory for odd fungi and creatures found down there.
On one fateful day, Ubukata was asked frantically by Orgura, one of his elders to deliver a jade bracelet to a side door at the local temple to Tsukiyo up on the surface. Ubukata knew where this was of course, just he didn’t understand her panic. He did not question Orgura however and wound his way up and onto the streets at night.
Knocking upon the temple’s door, a woman swathed in jade green silks and wearing a plain white porcelain mask nodded in greeting. She held out her hand and said nothing. Ubukata placed the bracelet in her hand and she pulled out a weathered text from inside her robes and handed it over.

Perplexed, Ubukata left with no words exchanged between them. Looking out towards the harbor on his way home, the clouds above parted to reveal a crescent moon. It hung perfectly just above the two large statues of Tsukiyo and Shizuru out in Xu Hong Bay. For some reason, Ubukata pulled out the book and began reading. This was a text on the nature of the soul and spirits. It was a strange book, unlike anything he had read before. He wondered why one of his elders wanted it.
Upon returning home, Ubukata could not find Orgura nor could anyone else in the warren point out where she went. Ubukata figured that he may as well avail himself of the book that was currently in his possession. He read much of it, but most of it still confused him. The book talked about strange and esoteric things.
A few months later, he had enough courage to visit the local temple to Tsukiyo and ask for some help understanding these concepts, but he never showed the book. With further visits, and beginning to accept Tsukiyo’s teachings Ubukata felt a shift in purpose. Eventually, he became an acolyte and learned to counsel, heal, and understand various mysteries of those things beyond the mortal world.
Over the next few years, Ubukata never met with or learned about the mysterious woman who presented him that text for the bracelet. Nor did Orgura return to his community’s warren.
As most of Tsukiyo’s clergy do, Ubukata was sent out into the world to learn more about various societies and cultures. Upon learning of the Explorer’s Guild and their endeavours over in a new world, Ubukata felt that pull once more and followed the Prince of the Moon’s guidance.
