Principium Paradoxi started off a plain old setting for a series of Vampire: The Masquerade but it has grown to a full blown world to run a number of World of Darkness Chronicles which include a Mage: The Ascension to potential crossover Chronicles.
It will look familiar to anyone who has played any tabletop role-playing games based in the World of Darkness but there are few subtle differences which will be personal twists added by myself to suit my style of play and personal tastes.
The world itself is based on a darker version of our modern world in which exist Mages,Vampires and other supernatural beings live in the shadows on the edge of human society. From the shadows some of these supernatural beings both guide and influence the mundane world around them either for their own ends or in attempt to improve the lot of humanity itself.
Principium Paradoxi is set on Earth starting around 2020 CE in a world which has one major difference to our own in so much the spectre of COVID 19 never appeared. Though this does not mean the world is a safer place because of the supernatural beings in the background.
As the Chronicles of the Principium Paradoxi cover the full range of supernatural races of the world of darkness they are divided into number of categories each corresponding to one supernatural race. They should allow the chronicles in each category to have common elements including cast and possible crossovers between the Chronicles within the categories. While those Chronicles which cross over supernatural races will be run as part of the Principium Paradoxi.
The current categories are:
- Principium Tenebrarum (The Darkness Principle) - These are World of Darkness Chronicles.
- Principium Mutationis (The Changeling Principle) - These are Changeling: The Dreaming Chronicles.
- Principium Daemonis (The Demon Principle) - These are Demon: The Fallen Chronicles.
- Principium Venatoris (The Hunter Principle) - These are Hunter: The Reckoning Chronicles.
- Principium Magi (The Mage Principle) - These are Mage: The Ascension Chronicles.

Principium Vampyri
Overview
This is a Vampire: The Masquerade (5th Edition) chronicle based in the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States and centred around a group of Vampires who are relatively new to the area itself.
The players are brought together by a powerful Hecata Vampire called the Marchese Leonado Sforza-Colloredo and dumped in San Francisco to either sink or swim. He never really makes it clear just why the players are in the city and he has left them to make their own way in the city.
Setting
The chronicle is set in San Francisco a city going through some changes since the military take over by the Camarilla Warlord Karsh in 2017 CE. The whole feel of the city and the San Francisco Bay Area have changed since his coming.
Where once San Francisco was a city where both the Camarilla and Anarchs lived in relative harmony but since the coming of the Warlord Karsh things have changed for some for the worse while for others it has become a city of opportunities.
The Warlord Karsh is enforcing the rule of Camarilla law over The City itself and openly forcing out any Anarchs out and sending out the message that any Anarchs they are not welcome in The City itself any more.
This has raised the tensions between the Camarilla and Anarchs of San Francisco and its region though at the moment it is an undercurrent in the city. But the Warlord Karsh has made it known he would like to expand the control of the Camarilla beyond The City itself into other regions of San Francisco Bay Area.
It is now only a matter of time before the tensions between the Camarilla and the Anarchs of San Francisco Bay Area will get to a breaking point.
Why San Francisco?
It has become a good place for those who want to make a name for themselves either within the Camarilla or the Anarchs because of the growing tension between the two groups.
It has also become a magnet for the Hecata, especially the la Famiglia Giovanni, who have recently brokered a deal with the Warlord Karsh to return to The City again. They have retaken the control of the financial district of San Francisco and the Bank of America based there again as they once did before they were expelled from the city. The Hecata come to the city to take advantage of financial district connections to the national financial systems of the United States.

Principium Vampyri
Overview
This is a Vampire: The Masquerade (5th Edition) chronicle based in Chicago in the United States and it is centred around a group of Vampires who are residents of the city though they did only move to the city itself some 20 years ago.
The players at the start are a coterie based in Chicago itself whose long term ambition is to become Archons but in the short term will be happy to be Hounds for the current Prince. Along their journey through Chicago they have gained a number of new companions who may or may not share their ambition.
Setting
The chronicle is set in Chicago a city which has a new Prince one Kevin Jackson who declared Praxis in 2010 from the previous Prince Joseph Peterson whose reign was cut short by the failed Olympic bid by Chicago 2016 CE. Joseph Peterson had staked a lot on the city winning the Olympic bid and when it failed his position as Prince was undermined.
The new Prince Kevin Jackson is relatively young as far as Camarilla Princes go even in the New World but he is very ambitious with the aim of making Chicago the jewel of Camarilla in the New World. It is a lofty ambition and it seams he could very capable of doing it even with his mortal background as a Black gang member of Bloods in Cabrini-Green within Chicago.
The new Prince Kevin Jackson may have the broad support of the Primogen but he still has to fight the inbuilt racism and elitism of both within the Camarilla and mortal world not helped by his mortal background in so much he was from the streets in the poor side of town. Though this has spurred him to try to become the best Camarilla Prince in the New World and beyond to prove them wrong even those within his own clan, the Ventrue, who doubt his ability.
Kevin Jackson has already started moulding the city into the jewel of the Camarilla by removing those Vampires which either posed a threat to the Masquerade or stood in the way of him consolidating his position as Prince.
Add to this mix the on going issues the Camarilla of Chicago always had with the Werewolves which surround the city and the newly reinvigorated Anarchs based in and around Gary. Now with the more active Second Inquisition hunting them from within the mortal world.
Much as always Chicago looks calm on the surface but as always under the surface are some dark under currents some of which even give the Elders of Chicago nightmares.
Why Chicago?
It has become a good place for those who want to make a name for themselves within the Camarilla who can take full advantage of Prince Kevin Jackson’s push to become the jewel of the Camarilla.
Any ambitious Camarilla Vampire could take advantage of the new Prince’s push to clean up the city and the Camarilla by making themselves indispensable to the Prince or just helping him consolidate his power within the City.
Though the flip side is that any Anarch brave enough to fight the Camarilla will find a home with those Anarchs in Gary who oppose the new Prince ambitions and still believe in the ideals of the Anarch Free State especially now with a weakened Camarilla.

Principium Magi
Overview
This is a Mage: The Ascension (20th Anniversary/5th Edition) Chronicle which based in London in the United Kingdom centred around a group of Mages who are residents of the city itself.
The players are brought together to find an errant apprentice who managed to lose herself in the East End. As always things never appear as easy as the players first thought as the apprentice has done a very good job of losing themselves.
Setting
The chronicle is set in London a city which is in flux with the recent events both on Tellurian and beyond. London is now free of any Vampires after the Second Inquisition cleared London of them from the city as of 2012 CE. On top of this the Avatar Storm has passed so once again travelling through the Gauntlet has become easier again to travel through again.
With the disappearance of the Vampires has left a power vacuum in the corridors of power in Westminster and beyond which still has to be filled by anyone brave enough to take up the mantle. The obvious candidates include the Technocratic Union who could strengthen in the city of their creation. Though there are those within the Second Inquisition itself who want to strengthen their hold on London hence the United Kingdom itself.
The weakening of the Avatar Storm has meant those Mages on the Tellurian who were cut off from their masters in the Umbra and Horizon Realms now have access to them now. But those trapped in the Umbra on both sides the Traditions and Technocracy have found things and dynamics on the Earth have changed not always for the better. They are trying to rebuild their damaged power structures on Earth. But those who were trapped on the Earth during the Avatar Storm are resentful of being told what to do as they have enjoyed their freedom from their masters during the storm. This is true for both the Technocratic Union and Traditions.
All this has raised the tensions between the Traditions and Technocratic Union again in London each trying to restamp their mark on London in the power vacuum. All further hindered by tensions and resentment between those who ware trapped either side of the Avatar Storm. Those who were trapped on Earth built new power structures without their masters while those masters freed by the end of the Avatar Storm what to stamp their authority back on those who were trapped.
So the players are thrown into this heady mix trying to find this missing Apprentice.
Why London?
It is a city which has a long, eventful and very rich history and once it was the centre of an Empire which spanned the globe so it good place for the players to flourish and even grow.
Add to this the fact with the removal of the Vampires and return of the Masters plus the fact it is the spiritual home of Technocratic Union itself, it is good place for players to take advantage of the conflicts within the city to carve out a nice niche for themselves, if they are brave enough to do so.
But now the spectre of the Second Inquisition hangs over the city who are basking in their successes in the city and the question among the other supernatural beings who are they going to hunt next?
Finally London is such a cosmopolitan city it has a very rich culture which now spans the world all brought in by immigrants from all over the world most looking for better life in the city. It has become a melting pot of people, cultures and even myths from all over the world both within the mortal and supernatural worlds.
In conclusion London is a rich, dynamic and full of enough mysteries to give the players more than enough to explore.

Overview
This is a Mage: The Ascension (20th Anniversary/5th Edition) Chronicle which based in Hampshire in the United Kingdom though due to nature of this Chronicle it could be run for types of groups including Vampires and even Changelings.
The players themselves could come together for various reasons or even the fact that they are residents of Hampshire.
Setting
The chronicle is set in county of Hampshire in the United Kingdom which is small microcosm of the worldwide battles between the Technocratic Union and Traditions for the heart and souls of the sleepers.
It seams that Hampshire itself is a backwater of the Ascension War and battles between the supernatural beings including Changelings, Vampires and even rarer Werewolves. It feels like the world has passed the county by and its supernatural inhabitants are still fighting same old wars they have been fighting for centuries.
In turn most of the world is far too busy with its own battles to notice or even care about Hampshire any more though this could be a fatal mistake to make as some very dark forces stir in the county one of which could potentially destroy the world as we know it.
Though saying that the major players in Hampshire are the Technocratic Union who have a vision of turning the county into an outpost of Technocracy on Earth in so much a place of futuristic technology supported by an ordered society with themselves ruling and guiding it to bright future for some. Though saying that their plans at moment seam to be a pipe dream as the operation to these plans have the upper hand but the leaders of Technocratic Union are very determined and focused.
So at the start the players are wallowing in this backwater though the deeper they look into it the darker the place looks.
Why Hampshire?
It is a quiet county in the south of England whose time passed a long time ago in so much its county city Winchester was the capital of England before the nobility and merchants moved the capital to London.
Though saying this it still has a strong maritime tradition with Portsmouth and Southampton though once again time has passed them by as other ports have become far more important and cut backs of the Royal Navy by successive British governments.
It may have been passed by but Hampshire is not down and out and a small microcosm of battles between supernatural beings still are going on fed by the counties rich history and myths. Somewhere within the county there is still one of the last Dragons on Earth who watches the world with an inhuman detachment.
[A Side Note: I lived in Basingstoke in Hampshire for over 10 years and found the place very grey and uninspiring compared to likes of London even Birmingham. It always stuck me that world had passed Basingstoke by even only remembered it for the fact it only had one set of traffic lights and lots of roundabouts. This is the inspiration for this Chronicle and its background.]
