Refers to vessels which lie between screens such as destroyers and capital warships such as battleships. Heavy cruisers act as "light battleships", soaking and dishing out cannon fire at the enemy fleet. Light cruisers act as "heavy destroyers", providing a more capable screening force and anti-air cover for its heavier allies.
