Shrapnel shells are a type of ammunition in which the projectile contains a number of sub-projectiles, which it releases close to impact by an explosive charge. Though superseded by HE shells in their classical anti-personnel mission, shrapnel shells are still used as a backup for direct-fire. Lead balls have been replaced by flechettes in American arsenals.
