During the 19th century many muzzleloader shooters added a small number of buckshot pellets to their standard ball shot cartridge. This helped them to engage in short-range firefights, and to injure enemy combatants in an off-chance medium range hit with buckshot. Such a shot at close range could result in a number of impacts, one of them leaving a grapefruit-sized hole on the other side, giving birth to the Australian term "buck & ball torture".
