The Karlodon is a titanic omnivorous mammal native to Oceanyka's northeastern wetlands. From head to tail it measures about 15 metres, but despite its staggering size, it possesses the uncanny, predatory grace of a feline. While it spends the vast majority of its time browsing the high canopies of Eucalyptus groves, its massive frame requires far more protein than a strictly folivorous diet can provide. This biological deficit transforms the creature into a terrifyingly efficient opportunistic predator. Its stink is unmistakable; the Karlodon’s defensive glands produce a concentrated chemical signature so potent it can be detected kilometres away, downwind. For a seasoned hunter, this distinctive smell is a signal to haul ass immediately, for a lone huntsman can easily become its next meal.
The creature’s physiology is dominated by the massive, antler-like boney growths protruding from its spine. These serve as a mobile, fortified nursery for the Karlodon’s young. For the first five years of their lives, the calves cling to these spurs, safely elevated above the murky waters of the wetlands while they observe their parent's hunting techniques. It is only after nearly reaching sexual maturity that they descend to the muck, achieving sexual maturity within 13 years. If the Karlodon is a great beast, a pissed-off female Karlodon with a litter of younglings in her back is a monster to be afraid of.
When cornered or particularly enraged, the Karlodon still has an ace up its sleeve, thanks to a couple of glands located near its anus. The primary defense is a dense cloud of neurotoxic particulate that creates a ten-metre dead-zone around itself. Those who survive the neurotoxin must still contend with the secondary release: a foul, pressurised gas that triggers immediate physiological shock. In high concentrations, the gas induces total systemic collapse, leading to comas or violent, uncontrollable bodily excretion. Hunting parties seeking to take the head of a Karlodon home are advised to bring at the very least a gas mask, and if possible, a full-body NBC suit.
