Strangling vine is the common name for a type of symbiotic predator in Oceanyka, which inhabits most forests but is notably common in the northern jungles. It is a very large reptillian at up to 21m long, remaining mostly static and hanging from tree branches. Their hosts provide water, support and camouflage in exchange for nutrients. Strangling vines can detect moving targets at a distance of about 30 meters, assessing their approximate size, weight, direction, speed and location. When in range, an individual will quickly launch itself at the approximate location of the victim's neck and either snap it or attempt to asphyxiate it. The surprising muscle strength will ensure most smaller mammals will immediately succumb, but larger ones like humans or marsupial lions can resist. Such creatures are hard to spot even for the trained eye. If attacked, slashing the animal should suffice to end the assault. Strangling vine meat is rough and hard, but their hide is very valued as camouflage due to looking almost exactly like wood.
