A pipe bomb is a homemade explosive device consisting of a tightly sealed metal pipe filled with explosive materials, such as gunpowder or other chemicals. The pipe is typically closed off on both ends with caps or plugs. The explosive materials are ignited using a fuse or electronic triggering mechanism, causing the device to explode with significant force. Despite their haphazard construction and tendency to go off in the user's hands, pipe bombs are an effective tool for causing mass casualties when grenades are not at hand, or when resupply is not guaranteed. In the mid-1960s, pipe bombs have become an icon of political terrorism.
