The starfish stinkhorn is a species of Oceanykan fungi that feed on nearby decaying matter, much of which is obtained through a unique predatory technique. Like other stinkhorns they smell of rotten meat and feces, so scavengers come to feed themselves. However, this species disguises itself as a "basket stinkhorn" (a different species) by crossing its "tentacles". Then, when an animal or large enough insect comes to "feed" itself, the starfish stinkhorn opens up and strikes. Its tentacles have tiny silicon needles containing a nerve agent, which immobilises and kills the prey. It is stored inside the fungi's structure to rot away, attracting more scavengers and further feeding the starfish stinkhorn. Though almost harmless to humans, it is normally burnt or sprayed with fungicide because it does smell awful, and an accidental sting could prove fatal to young children.
Some have theorised that this species is a remainder of an earlier time in Oceanykan ecological history, when most things could kill each other with ease. Though believed to be economically worthless, the starfish stinkhorn has been proven to include exotic chemical compounds which are useful for creating alchemical serums.
