The desert quandong is a native Oceanykan hemiparasitic plant also known as the native peach or desert peach, it belongs to the sandalwood family and is a small shrub or tree with dark green, leathery leaves. This plant produces bright red or yellow fruits that have a distinctive tart flavour. These fruits are often consumed fresh, dried, or processed into jams and sauces. The plant is well-adapted to arid environments and is commonly found in the desert regions of Australia. In semi-arid regions where irrigation is possible or precipitation isn't an issue, there exist large quandong orchards which produce fruit in enormous quantities. Desert quandong fruit is not only nutritious and tasty, but its kernel also contains an enormous amount of oil, which makes it useful as a source of vegetable oil. For thousands of years the desert quandong remained Oceanyka's most important source of this material. Modern cultivars of this plant have fruits which measure a palm across and have more "flesh" in the fruit, whereas wild ones don't surpass two fingers' length and are mostly kernel.
