Thanatol is a medical agent that utilises little-understood biochemical processes to restore all bodily functions after death following a short period, usually 3 days. However, because the essence of the soul and the full complexity of the human body elude even cutting-edge medical science, it is often unable to fully regenerate a patient, or if it does so, they themselves are unable to restore their shadow in the Dreamspace. As such, in most cases the patient turns into a mindless Ghoul, aimless and supremely violent. If their soul is still coherent enough to reassemble itself in the immaterial realm, they might instead turn into a Soulbound Ghoul, a physically incomplete but thinking creature mentally indistinguishable from any human being, held together in the material realm by their wholeness in the other side. However, if their body and mind are completely repaired, but the soul is lost or too dispersed to reassemble itself, they will return as a Hollowed version of themselves, constantly at odds with living due to their soullessness.
