The Ironcross Roundshield is an Oceanykan shield that takes its name from the wrought-iron cross that reinforces its front, dividing the shield’s surface into four equal segments. Each arm of the cross strengthens the wooden frame while the outer rim, banded with iron, protects it from splintering under repeated impacts. Designed for balance between mobility and protection, it became the hallmark of professional retainers, mercenaries, and the more disciplined warbands of the Dark Ages.
Unlike the larger Ankeric Shield, the Ironcross is not strictly designed for formation fighting, making it ideal for warriors armed with swords, axes, or maces. It is also less effective against volleys of arrows or crossbow bolts but excels in skirmishes and close-range assaults where agility and quick parries matter more than total coverage.
Its distinct design spread across Oceanyka’s fractured realms, from feudal militias to outlaw companies, eventually becoming a symbol of early chivalric warfare. Even centuries later, ceremonial versions adorn the halls of noble houses, reminding all of an age when battles were fought like gentlemen.
