The theurge learns to commune with the stubborn, slow-witted spirits of the earth as well as the frantic, young, high-strung ghosts inhabiting modern electronic circuitry. An animist does not merely operate a machine; they enter into a reciprocal partnership with the object’s indwelling essence, coaxing a jammed mechanism to clear or pleading with a parched engine to find one last kilometre of life. They may also communicate with the more ancient spirits, especially those of animals and nature. Its mastery requires a deep respect for the "personality" of the living and the unliving, acknowledging that even a mass-produced steel girder can develop a spiritual weight through its history of service and the human intent it has absorbed, but respecting and vowing before spirits much older than even mankind itself, those of the natural world. By treating the environment as a congregation of sentient entities rather than a collection of inert resources, the practitioner can manipulate the hidden levers of reality, persuading the very world around them to conspire in their favour.
