Chemical weapons are weapons of mass destruction produced knowingly or unknowingly by synthesis using Chemicals. They were first deployed en-masse during World War I, once more during the Yellow Winter of World War II, and clandestinely, in the various proxy conflicts of the Cold War, including the Vietnam War. They are divided into blister agents such as mustard gas (designed to irritate tissues and organs), nerve agents such as sarin or VX (designed to directly attack the nervous system), blood agents such as cyanide (designed to absorb into the blood) and choking agents such as chlorine or phosgene (designed to make respiration impossible). Additionally, in the Oceanykan Federation there exist a fifth class of chemical weapons, which are most commonly seen in its fauna: necrotic agents, such as superenzymes, which cause rapid cell death manifesting as necrosis.
While humanity has had access to poison weapons for millennia, chemical weapons are characterised by their capability to cause mass casualty events as a result of strategic bombing or acts of terrorism. Unfortunately, because their sheer destructive potential is surpassed by biological weapons, and even more so by nuclear weapons, there has been less doubt about employing these types of weapons in armed conflicts.

Additionally, their use against non-combatants is penalised as MISUSE OF WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION and categorised as a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY by Article 20 of The Oceanykan Constitution.
