Cathedral of Donblas

Cathedral of Donblas, Justice Maker, God of Justice

Overview:
The Cathedral of Donblas is one of the oldest and most imposing landmarks in Ashkarin—a towering, stone-wrought cathedral whose soaring stained-glass tower gleams like a sword-point when caught by the morning sun. Dedicated to Donblas, the God of Justice, the cathedral has seen centuries of reform, expansion, and political intrigue. It dominates the skyline near the Iron Court, its great silver bell tolling only for high trials, sacred verdicts, and declarations of new law.

Recently, a wave of lavish donations from Ashkarin’s burgeoning merchant class has fueled a new phase of renovations: new wings of marble, fresh silver cladding on the bells, and breathtaking stained-glass windows depicting the triumphs of Donblas.

A manicured grove of ancient oaks and stone-paved walkways separates the main cathedral from a cluster of clergy residences, well-appointed and guarded at all hours.

📜 2. Archives of Law (Restricted Lore Access)

“Within these vaults lie truths too dangerous for kings.”

Clerics and Paladins of Donblas may request access to ancient trial records, verdicts, and oaths.

  • Players may ask specific questions about:

    • A name, title, or noble family

    • A forgotten relic or cursed contract

    • An old heresy or outlawed sect

  • If appropriate, the GM gives one truth, lead, or rumor related to the inquiry.

🧷 3. Oath-Binding Rituals

"Speak the truth. Swear the vow. Pay the price."

Characters may swear an oath in the Cathedral's sanctum.
If broken, Donblas marks the oathbreaker with a divine brand—visible only to other faithful.

  • Effects:

    • While the oath is upheld: +1 to saves vs fear and charm

    • If broken: The character is treated as Cursed (−2 to reaction rolls, denied divine healing) until atonement is made.

“Justice is the last sanctuary of the powerless.”

Characters may petition the Cathedral for:

  • Sanctuary (1d4 days): Cannot be lawfully harmed while inside

  • Writ of Suspension: Delays an execution, trial, or fine by 1 week

  • Trial by Light: Demands a divine judgment (usually a duel, a test, or ordeal)

📘 OSE Use: Excellent narrative tool—let players avoid immediate punishment, delay rivals, or invoke church authority.

⛪ 5. Rest, Rations, and Recovery

"For every sword raised, a cloak must be offered."

Low-level lawful characters, or those in service to the Church, may:

  • Rest in the clergy quarters (basic food and clean bed, healing rolled with "advantage")

  • Refill rations (1d6 days) at cost (1 gp/day), or free with a favor owed

  • Have their gear mended and weapons blessed (no magic, but counts as lawful for striking)

🧪 6. Holy Tasks & Trials

"We do not hand out blessings—we send people to earn them."

Examples of low-level quests offered by the Cathedral:

  • Retrieve a stolen relic from a nearby hamlet

  • Escort a young acolyte to bless the graves at an abandoned village

  • Investigate missing remains disturbed near Stonehell

  • Serve as impartial guards during a noble trial (keep order, don’t interfere)

🗡️ Rewards May Include:

  • Minor scrolls (Bless, Detect Evil)

  • 1-use divine tokens (e.g., +1 to a saving throw)

  • Recognition by the Church—useful with nobles, legal cases, or other clergy

🎖️ Optional: Join the Order of Judgment

Clerics, paladins, or lawful adventurers may become initiates in the Order.

  • Granted a symbol of office

  • Can call upon 1 favor per adventure (safe house, escort, legal leniency)

  • Must answer one call to duty per month (a summons, a quest, or a trial)

🕊️ OSE-Compatible Faction Tool: No extra mechanics, just social leverage and narrative depth.
