Wheelmarked

⚙️ So You’re a Thief?

Acrobat or Assassin

Welcome to the Wheelmarked

“Coins turn faster when blood oils the gears.”

Ashkarin has two economies. One smiles from behind marble ledgers.
The other cuts your purse and sells you the string. Welcome to the second.

You’ve been noticed. That flick of the wrist, that nimble dodge, that greedy spark in your eye—you’re guild material.
And now, you’re in.

Or more precisely: you owe.

Your handler is Sylvera "Silkfang", who watches from behind coin and curtain. If she smiles at you? That’s a warning.

📜 Overview

The Wheelmarked are Ashkarin’s invisible tithe:
A syndicate of thieves, assassins, smugglers, and spies bound by contract, coin, and the black promise of silence.

They trace their origin to a king’s missing crown, a tax collector’s slit throat, and a wheel that never stopped turning. Their symbol—a broken-spoked wheel—is burned into every initiate. It is not ornamental.

To steal outside the Wheelmarked is to trespass.
To trespass is to bleed.

🗣️ Whispers of the Wheel — Thieves’ Cant

All Wheelmarked operatives are trained in Thieves’ Cant: a secret language of glances, slang, carved signs, and whispered edge.
Old guilds call it the Ash Speech.

Cant is how you warn, claim, bribe, and threaten—without anyone knowing you're doing it.

🎯 Oaths and Debts

You swore three sacred oaths:

  • Oath of the Wheel: “Turn with the Guild, or be crushed beneath it.”

  • Oath of the Coin: “Every job, every lie, every life—the Wheel gets its cut.”

  • Oath of Blood: “Betrayal demands blood. No exceptions. No mercy.”

With the oaths came the mark—a broken wheel tattooed into the flesh of your dominant hand.
And with the mark came the debt: 1,000 gold crowns. Guild training is expensive. And the Wheel always collects.

🔥 The Marked Hand Tradition

Every tavern in Ashkarin knows the game:

“See the Wheel on a hand? Offer a drink. They say no? You punch them in the face.”

This isn’t a joke. It’s guild discipline disguised as tradition.
Fail the test, and the Guild assumes you’ve gone soft—or rogue.

🕯️ Training and Discipline

All Wheelmarked thieves undergo Trial Service, with lessons in:

  • Pick Pockets

  • Open Locks

  • Find/Remove Traps

  • Move Silently

  • Hide in Shadows

  • Detect Noise

  • Climb Walls

  • Read Languages (contracts, cant glyphs, black seals)

Failure brings:

  • Finger-breaking

  • Public lashings

  • Mock trials before Blades

Success brings sanctioned blood. One solo job. No help. No screw-ups.

The gods ask for worship.
The Wheel only asks what you’re worth.

And if you betray it?
You’ll pray your own shadow forgets you.

Guild Divisions

🕸️ The Wheelmarked – Guild Divisions of Ashkarin's Underworld

“The wheel turns, but it never forgets the hands that push it.”

These divisions operate as specialized arms of the Wheelmarked guild, each mastering a unique domain of control, information, or vice within Ashkarin.

🎭 1. The Silver Web (Information Brokers)

“Nothing escapes the web—not words, not whispers, not wails.”

  • Collects secrets, rumors, and reports from informants and spies.

  • Maintains relationships with bards, scribes, city clerks, and gossiping nobility.

  • Known to plant false information or manipulate events subtly through well-placed truths.

💰 2. The Ledgerhands (Fences & Coinmasters)

“If it has value, it has a price. If it has no price, we’ll find one.”

  • Manage the sale, smuggling, and distribution of stolen goods.

  • Run black market auctions, counterfeit operations, and money laundering through noble fronts.

  • Closely allied with the Dalmont Exchange House under Lord Cassien’s indirect patronage.

⚔️ 3. The Hollow Blades (Assassins & Enforcers)

“You don’t see us coming. You only notice we were there when you stop breathing.”

  • Contract killers, leg-breakers, and silent agents of fear.

  • Operate alone or in tightly knit cells known as "folds."

  • Maintain ritual silence before contracts—broken only to speak a target’s name.

🧪 4. The Duskwrights (Alchemy & Arcane Subversion)

“We bottle power, poison truth, and distill fate.”

  • Specialists in black alchemy, potion mimicry, and arcane traps.

  • Supplies the Coin’s underground with charm-imbued items, false relics, and deadly elixirs.

  • Tied to several fallen apprentices from Tower Arcana—those whose methods broke laws or minds.

🧿 5. The Blackvale Chorus (Performance & Distraction)

“A smile buys silence. A dance buys death.”

  • Entertainers, illusionists, bards, and acrobats trained to beguile, spy, or strike.

  • Spread through Ashkarin’s taverns and stages—including a few inside noble houses.

  • Known for sending coded messages hidden within song lyrics or riddled performances.

🕷️ 6. The Rootcutters (Street Operations)

“The gutter speaks clearer than the high halls.”

  • Street urchins, cutpurses, sneak-thieves, and message runners.

  • Control alleyways, rooftops, and sewer routes throughout Ashkarin.

  • Recruit from orphan gangs and failed Pale Lodge applicants.

🧱 7. The Ledgerbound (Contract Keepers & Guild Stewards)

“Every crime is paperwork in disguise.”

  • Scribes, notaries, and oathkeepers of the guild.

  • Maintain black ledgers, blood-bound contracts, and membership rolls.

  • Administer internal disputes, oaths of silence, and promotion rites.
