Stonehell Level 3A – Monster Dorm

Player Summary of Explored Areas

Level 3A was once a dwarven quarter and workers’ dormitories, but now it has become a chaotic neighborhood of monsters who have, surprisingly, learned to coexist. The whole quadrant feels lived-in rather than abandoned, with signs of habitation everywhere. While the factions here do not trust each other, they maintain a tense balance through caution, fear, and clear boundaries.

The Lay of the Land

The halls here mix ruined dwarven stonework with makeshift monster living spaces. Many old dwarven rooms still exist: feast halls, barracks, a chapel, and simple stone dorms. Interspersed among them are gnoll dens, ogre hangouts, harpy nests, and scattered vermin threats.

Dwarven carvings and symbols still appear throughout the complex. Some respond to touch or speech, confirming the ancient craftsmanship is not entirely dormant.

Abandoned domiciles dot the halls, some filled with debris, vermin, or strange finds. Others are simply empty rooms left to dust and mold.

The Factions

Ogres

A small brotherhood of male ogres occupies the northern chambers. They have turned their halls into a crude gymnasium and bachelor pad. Here they lift improvised weights, drink harsh liquor, and argue loudly about which humanoids taste best.

Despite being intimidating, they seemed more focused on their own interests than on seeking violence.

Gnolls

The gnolls of this level are a diminished tribe. Their barracks, guard posts, and chieftess’s quarters show a people stretched thin. They scavenge, cook questionable “blood bread,” and maintain a ragged defensive posture.
Although wary of intruders, their behavior suggests exhaustion and desperation rather than bloodlust.

Wererats

Sealed away behind a massive boulder, the wererats have crafted an exclusive hideout accessible only in their smaller forms. They run a quiet but profitable business as spies and assassins for anyone in Stonehell who can pay.
Even from the outside, their lair feels organized, secretive, and more civilized than the others here.

Harpies

These shrieking newcomers nest in a filthy southern chamber. Their lair reeks of death, excrement, and old charm-magic misdeeds. They sometimes wander the halls looking for prey, but mostly remain in their nest unless disturbed.

Notable Locations

Dwarven Remnants

  • Feast Hall with the Carving of “Gudrun”
Touching the dwarven carving while speaking her name caused all empty containers to fill with rich dwarven mead.

  • Dwarven Chapel
A stone badger altar and a hooded dwarf statue—both still active with dwarven spiritual energy. Moving the altar revealed deeper access below.

  • Barracks and living halls
Empty, dusty chambers showing signs of long abandonment, with the occasional vermin threat.

Monster Areas

  • Ogre Gym and Dens
Piles of scrap iron turned into weights, foul sleeping furs, and stashes of potent ogre brews.
One den held a forgotten potion among the debris.

  • Gnoll Holdings
Guard posts, barracks, a chieftess’s chamber with a chained paramour, and ovens baking dubious food.

  • Harpy Nest
A nauseating hall of torn furniture, bones, and constant singing echoes.

Hazards and Curiosities

  • The Hall of the Elders
Marble busts and a mosaic floor concealing an arrow trap.
The workmanship suggests this hall once honored ancient human figures.

  • Floating Boulder
A perfectly round boulder that hovers 3½ feet off the floor and glides easily when pushed. No one knows who enchanted it or why.

  • The Grand Shaft
A hundred-foot vertical drop into the deeper dungeon, lined with gargoyle niches. Noise draws unwanted attention upward.

  • The Plaza of the Pool
A luminous chamber with a semicircular pool whose carvings depict fish and frogs. Something in the pool animates violently when approached.

  • Mossy and Leaking Chambers
Vermin, giant ticks, and other dungeon fauna lurk in the damp and overgrown side rooms.

General Observations

  • This quadrant is active. Most rooms are occupied, patrolled, or at least claimed.

  • While none of the factions are friendly, they show more interest in policing borders than starting wars.

  • Many areas retain dwarven architecture tied to deeper secrets and mechanisms.

  • Wandering monsters are common, reinforcing the sense that this is a lived-in neighborhood, not a forgotten ruin.

Elephant

A lingering mystery hangs over the stone elephant chamber. The statue stands in perfect stillness at the center of the room, its craftsmanship far cruder than the surrounding dwarven halls yet radiating an unmistakable sense of vigilance. When the party entered, a disembodied voice warned them not to approach, and the moment they edged closer, the massive form groaned to life, sealing the exits and charging with terrifying force. Nothing else in the room explained why it awakens or what power animates it, nor why it delivers a riddle-like warning before attacking. The locals give the place a wide berth, but no one seems to know who carved it, what ancient magic drives it, or what “the oliphant’s greatest fear” truly means. For now, the statue remains an unsolved piece of Stonehell’s deeper machinery, a puzzle waiting for the party to connect it to something they have yet to discover.
