Disciples of Vaughn

⚔️ Disciples of Vaughn

“Stand for the fallen. Fight for the just. Never draw for coin alone.”

🛡️ Overview

The Disciples of Vaughn are a holy brotherhood of warriors, healers, and battlefield chaplains dedicated to justice through service, strength through sacrifice. Where the Wardens of St. Ras serve the dead and the damned, the Disciples serve the living people of Ashkarin—guarding the roads, liberating border towns, and fighting back against chaos wherever it rises.

They are not political.
They are not inquisitors.
They are soldiers of conscience, forged in holy fellowship and tempered on the battlefield.

Founded by Vaughn the Boundless, a paladin who refused to leave wounded allies in a cursed battlefield even after his order fell, the Disciples uphold honor, courage, and brotherhood over command or coin.

✝️ Philosophy and Code

No Blade for Coin AloneThe Disciples do not hire themselves out as mercenaries. Coin may follow, but cause must come first.
Shield the DefenselessTo turn from those in need is to turn from Vaughn. Aid, shelter, and protect whenever possible.
Justice Over LawLaws are not always just. The Disciples answer to a higher moral clarity.
No Retreat from Righteous BattleIf the cause is right, the Disciples hold the line—even to the last.

🧱 Structure

The Disciples are organized loosely, with chapters forming around active missions and senior officers known as Bladesworn.

🏕️ Headquarters and Campaigns

🧭 Character Background Flavor

Perfect for PCs who:

  • Left the order due to injury, scandal, or a moral disagreement with leadership.

  • Are the last survivor of a crusade gone wrong.

  • Were once saved by a Disciple and took up the cause.

  • Still carry a sacred item or letter from a fallen commander.

🪖 The Battle Standard – “The Star and the Blade”

Design:

  • Field: Deep red, representing sacrifice and blood willingly shed for the just.

  • Centerpiece: A silver longsword, point-down, symbolizing restraint and readiness.

  • Above the hilt: A six-pointed white star, each point representing one of Vaughn’s founding oaths.

Usage:

  • Carried into battle by the Torchbearer of the Company.

  • Planted at sites of last stands and memorials.

  • If the standard falls, surviving Disciples are expected to recover or die trying.

🔥 Disciples in Play

For PCs:

  • Begin with a holy token from a fallen comrade or mentor (amulet, hilt fragment, battle prayer).

  • Gain contacts among peasant communities, who often revere the Disciples as heroes.

  • May be called upon by former commanders for assistance, judgment, or aid in rebuilding fallen chapels.

Adventure Hooks:

  • A Bladesworn has gone rogue, killing without trial. The Order seeks help to bring him in—alive.

  • An undead knight once defeated by Vaughn has returned—and bears the Disciple banner in mockery.

  • A Field Chapel has fallen silent near a planar rift. The last message: “Star gone. We hold.”

🕯️ Summary

The Disciples of Vaughn are not zealots, not inquisitors, and not mercenaries. They are warriors of principle—those who choose to fight only when the cause is worthy, and to die only when others may live.

Their faith is not in gods, but in justice.
Their power lies not in magic, but in conviction.

They carry no price, only purpose.

Why Join?

⚔️ 1. To Fight for Something Greater Than Gold

“They carry no price, only purpose.”

A character disillusioned with mercenary life, city politics, or corrupt commands may be drawn to the Disciples for their steadfast code. The order offers not wealth, but meaningful combat in the name of the defenseless, and an honorable standard by which to measure one’s life.

Ideal for: Lawful fighters, reformed thieves, ex-soldiers, or fallen nobles seeking redemption.

✝️ 2. To Follow the Legacy of Vaughn the Boundless

“He never left the field. Even when all others did.”

Characters who feel called to heroism, martyrdom, or legend may see Vaughn as a mythic figure worth emulating. Joining the Disciples is not just allegiance—it’s inheritance. Vaughn’s story is one of endurance, loyalty, and final stands, inspiring those who refuse to quit on their companions.

Ideal for: Paladins, torchbearers with tragic pasts, or young warriors raised on battlefield tales.

🧭 3. To Wander with Righteous Purpose

“The Disciples don’t build temples—they build roads into darkness.”

Because the order operates from field chapels, its members are constantly traveling. A character seeking a roaming, meaningful life—protecting smallfolk, aiding frontier towns, or taking the fight to cults and chaos—will find the structure they need, without a leash.

Ideal for: Rangers, wandering clerics, or adventurers with no place to call home.

💔 4. To Atone for a Past Failure

“The only coin they accept is the one paid in blood and deeds.”

A character who fled a righteous battle, abandoned comrades, or once served an unjust lord may see the Disciples as a path to redemption. The order does not ask for your past—only that you hold the line when it matters. It offers forgiveness through action, not penance.

Ideal for: Exiles, criminals seeking a clean slate, or knights dishonored in court.

🛡️ 5. To Belong to a Fellowship of Equals

“They kneel only to conscience, and rise only together.”

Unlike temple hierarchies or rigid military orders, the Disciples organize around mutual respect, shared danger, and earned leadership. A character seeking brotherhood without chains will find it here: among warriors who choose each fight for themselves, and stand shoulder-to-shoulder when they do.

Ideal for: PCs tired of being pawns, lone wolves seeking loyalty, or squires ready to earn their first real battle scar.
