Math, Keeper of the Flame of Wisdom

🔮 Math, Keeper of the Flame of Wisdom

God of Magic, Knowledge, and the Balance of Power
Greater Power of the Celtic Pantheon
Alignment: Neutral

📜 Lore & Origin

Math is the prime conduit through which all magic flows. Every spell, every cantrip, every whispered invocation of the arcane is a thread from the tapestry he weaves. He is both scholar and sorcerer, judge and inventor, wise ruler and elusive trickster. In some realms, he is Math ap Mathonwy, the ancient wizard-prince who forged magic into civilization. In others, he is simply the Flame-Bearer, the force that sustains the spark of the arcane in all thinking beings.

He is revered by mages, scholars, druids, and seers, and feared by those who dare corrupt knowledge for domination. He is neither benevolent nor cruel—Math is the cosmic balance of understanding, a neutral force that serves wisdom and order, though not always peace.

🧙‍♂️ Depiction

Math is usually shown as an imposing, long-robed figure with flowing silver hair and a thick beard, his eyes glowing faintly like starlight. He bears a silver staff topped with a living flame, and his cloak is always black on the outside, gray within, trimmed in shifting runes of silver. His presence is one of silent awe—less divine judgment and more inevitable revelation.

He may also appear as a flame itself—calm and steady, or raging and wild—depending on the viewer’s relationship to magic.

🛕 Worship & Doctrine

  • Temples: Often observatories, monastic towers, or spell libraries. Sacred sites are located where the veil between worlds is thin.

  • Clergy Titles: Flamebearers, Scribes of the Wand, Lorewards

  • Holy Days: Equinoxes (balance of light and dark), Eclipses (hidden knowledge revealed), Winter Solstice (the flame within darkness)

  • Holy Symbol: A single silver flame, sometimes rising from a wand or open palm

  • Sacred Animal: Raven – a symbol of prophecy, memory, and hidden knowledge
