Skyrend Keep – Sentinel Above the Pass
High above the Blackfang Pass, where the jagged hills close like jaws around the old trade road, Skyrend Keep clings to a narrow stone spur, its walls etched against the sky like the bones of some great beast. Wind batters its towers and snow clings to the shadowed crevices even in summer, yet the Keep endures—unbowed, unbroken, and never taken.
Its position is as formidable as its legend: the main road below passes directly beneath the outer walls, and the only approach to the upper gate winds through narrow switchbacks carved into the mountainside. Any attacker would be forced into a killing corridor, exposed at every step to volleys from the battlements. The fortress’s design—compact, brutal, and efficient—ensures that a small defending force can hold it against a much larger foe.
Though its days as a vital military bulwark are long gone, Skyrend Keep remains intact and inhabited. Its current garrison is small—barely a dozen seasoned soldiers—but the Keep itself is well-maintained, its walls still patrolled, its stones still warm with fire and life.
At its heart stands the Iower, the main structure of the Keep, housing the garrison’s hall, sparse barracks, storerooms, and the commander’s private quarters. Beneath this lies the Undercroft, a network of vaulted chambers carved deep into the stone of the spur. These lower levels once held the fortress’s granaries, cisterns, and armories—but also noble vaults, tombs, and the sealed Gateway, a magically warded passage said to have once served as the formal threshold of the Grand Dukes' domain.
When the last true Guardian of Skyrend departed generations ago, the Gateway was sealed with powerful enchantments, and a new trackway was cut to bypass it. Whatever lies beyond the stone arch now remains untouched, save for the occasional flicker of arcane light that dances across its seal on cloudless full moons.
The Keep is now commanded by Ser Halil Havellor, second son of a lesser noble house from Ashkarin. Denied inheritance and hungry for his own domain, Halil used his personal wealth and family ties to petition for the stewardship of Skyrend. Officially, he claimed it was to preserve a vital strategic landmark. Unofficially, it's said he came for the Keep’s fabled wine cellar, stocked with vintages from the days of the Grand Dukes.
Halil is no fool—he keeps the garrison sharp enough to hold the Keep and the books tidy enough to avoid scrutiny—but his true passion lies in poring over dusty ledgers and sampling bottles older than the nation that governs him. Still, his curiosity about the sealed Gateway has grown. He’s had trusted men quietly explore the Undercroft, searching for forgotten keys or cracks in the enchantment.
Skyrend Keep may have been reduced to a historical footnote by Ashkarin’s strategists, but it still watches the pass as it always has. In the right hands—or the wrong—it could once again shape the fate of the Gann River Vale.
