The Blackfang Foothills rise in sharp relief against the eastern sky—jagged, iron-veined ridges cut with ravines, shale escarpments, and the ghosts of long-lost roads. Their blood runs rich with silver, obsidian, and the infamous blood-ore, a volatile mineral valued by war mages and alchemists alike.
While monsters and duergar raiders still prowl these hills, most tread cautiously—for they know the dwarves are not gone.
🛡️ The Silent Vaults of the Stoneclad Clans
Beneath the ridgelines, sealed by runic gates and molten stone, lie the halls of the Blackfang Vault-Clans. Once active traders, master miners, and famed artificers, these dwarves withdrew from the surface world over a century ago, following a brutal war of attrition against the duergar slave-legions of the Deep Paths.
Their decision to retreat was not one of surrender, but of cultural hibernation. Their citadels remain intact—lit, guarded, and alive, but silent.
Occasionally, a young dwarven adventurer emerges from the deep to walk the surface. These emissaries say little of their kin’s affairs. They bear markings of clanhood and oaths written in stone-ink, and speak of “watching the weave of time tighten.” Most leave no name, and fewer still return.
Legends say that if the drums of the Blackfangs beat once more, it will be heard for a hundred miles—and it will mean war, or prophecy.
⚒️ Mining and Modern Conflict
In the dwarves’ absence, gnome prospectors and Duskwater-backed miners have taken to the old tunnels and veins, with Skyrend Keep overseeing this fragile, unofficial boom. These new delvers walk a dangerous line—duergar remnants, buried traps, and unsettled dwarven wards make every venture a gamble.
-
Gnome camps near old dwarven forges have reported mechanical echoes, as if someone below is still hammering.
-
Duskwater companies are locked in turf wars over rare vein access, often hiring mercenaries to “resolve disputes.”
-
Skyrend’s Commander, Ser Halil, walks a careful political line—issuing patrols to protect surface miners, while quietly respecting dwarven border-stones.
🏰 Skyrend Keep and the Vaults
The dwarves once held a blood-pact with the lords of Skyrend, maintaining a back route between their vault and the fortress's Undercroft. Though that pact has gone dormant, Ser Halil has begun to search for the "Iron Testament"—a relic said to bear the signatures and seals of the old alliance.
If found and returned, some say it could reopen diplomatic ties. Others fear it would awaken something better left dreaming in stone.
