🛠️ The Making of the Waste
Once a verdant lowland of twilight groves and clearwater rivers, the region now known as the Seeping Waste was ravaged not by war—but by labor.
When the Sterling Dominion carved the prison-complex of Stonehell from the roots of the Vyrkasha Mountains, it excavated over 17 million cubic feet of stone—enough to smother valleys. Prisoners were marched by the hundreds to dump this stone into the forested lowlands east of the range, returning with wagons full of timber felled from what was once a sacred forest. Over 10,000 trees. The trees propped Stonehell’s endless ceilings. The stone poisoned the forest floor.
What began as excavation became devastation. Roads were paved to support the constant convoys, watched by Dominion war wizards, who took the opportunity to observe their subjects more closely. Observation huts became tower labs, where prisoners were subjected to experiments in magic, loyalty, and obedience. If they solved enough traps, if they endured enough pain, if they broke through by cunning or force—they were promised freedom.
Some got it.
Most died.
The rest changed.
Dominion spellcraft pushed beyond ethical bounds, and the region itself began to remember. Living spells spawned. Magical feedback twisted time, speech, and biology. The experimenters fled. The towers collapsed. And the region wept for what it had become.
✨ The Current Waste
The Seeping Waste is a zone of arcane decay and mutagenic vitality, where the weave itself festers and breathes.
-
Colors pulse unnaturally: violet fogs, amethyst rivers, swaying curtains of rose light.
-
Gravity glitches: boulders float, blood pools midair, birds tumble sideways through still sky.
-
Sound warps: echoes return in reverse, thoughts answer aloud, and spells occasionally cast themselves.
-
The dead do not rot—they calcify into crystal or bloom with sentient fungi.
🧬 Living Spells
In the Waste, some magic never ends—it evolves.
-
Living Fireball: Pulses across terrain, detonates, reforms in 1d4 rounds. HD 7.
-
Living Web: Dangles from canopies, cast Web every 3 rounds. HD 4.
-
Living Charm Person: Invisible shimmer, lures travelers with phantom conversation. HD 3.
-
Living Animate Dead: Resides in a crystal grove, puppeteers moss-laced corpses.
OSE Note: Use spell level to derive HD and intensity. Immune to most non-magical damage. Can only be affected by dispel magic, wish, or specific ritual-based weaknesses.

Wield fire-tempered relics, chant suppressive hymns, die in holy infernos.

See living spells as unborn souls—try binding them into new bodies.
Lead by bone-seers who speak with flayed memories.
