Iron Claws

🪶 The Iron Claws – Ashkarin’s Mounted City Watch

“Eyes sharp. Talons ready.”

🧭 Overview

The Iron Claws are Ashkarin’s all-female mounted city watch, forged from necessity when too many of the city’s men vanished into war, ruins, or the lumber camps.

Formed by decree of the Invincible Overlord, the Claws consist of young women selected from orphanages, the Pale Lodge, or poor districts, raised to serve as both enforcers of the Overlord’s law and handlers of the city’s war birds—the towering, flightless beasts known as Cirthael.

They are the public face of law and order. Some fear them. Many respect them. Most know better than to cross them.

⚙️ Organization

  • Total Members: 250

  • Riders (mounted on war birds): 100

  • Active Patrol Riders per Shift: ~30

  • Remaining Claws: Stationed on walls, at gates, in court halls, noble blocks, and major civic centers

  • Command Structure:

    • Clutchlings – recruits

    • Talons – field agents

    • Rookwardens – shift leaders

    • Aeriekeepers – senior trainers

    • Wyrmhooks – elite investigators or bounty recovery officers

Umbrella Agency: The Iron Claws report to the Iron Watch, Ashkarin’s broader military-police authority.

Headquarters: 🏰 The Windrook Aerie – a rookery-fort on the west wall, filled with stables, sleeping quarters, sparring rings, and whistle-towers.

🐦 War Birds – Cirthael ("Iron-Claws")

“They don’t fly—but they’ll leave you wishing they did.”

These towering, flightless birds are bred to enforce, chase, and terrify. Their powerful legs allow bounding leaps over crowds and barriers, and their hooked beaks can crack helmets.

  • Height: 7–8 ft

  • Covered in feather-scale armor naturally grown over bone

  • Each bonded to a single rider from chickhood

  • Used in patrol, riot suppression, and rapid city response

OSE Stats – Cirthael (War Bird):

🧕 The Riders – The Iron Claws

  • All women recruited as young as 8

  • Raised in strict lodgings with their birds

  • At 14: Begin patrol shifts.

  • At 16: Swear the Talon Oath and receive full uniform

  • Highly disciplined, but share the usual burdens of city service:

    • Underpaid

    • Overworked

    • Corruption common at the lower ranks

🛡️ Duties & Deployment

  • Daily Duties:

    • Street patrols (30 riders per shift)

    • Gate duty & wall watches

    • Riot suppression

    • Noble district visibility

    • Escort for taxes, judges, or relics

  • Coverage Zones:

    • Greathook Market

    • The West & River Gates

    • Bellwalk Noble District

    • The Aerie Quarter (civic courts, palatial halls)

  • Typical Shifts:

    • One rider per bird patrols a sector while foot-claws sweep alleys and enforce curfews

🧧 Flaws & Politics

Despite their training, the Iron Claws are still human. They're:

  • Prone to low-level bribery (especially at the gates or market permits)

  • Harsh toward open defiance and criminal display

  • Feared more than loved in poor districts

  • Sometimes viewed with suspicion by male Iron Watch officers

🕵️ The Unspoken Pact – The Claws & The Wheelmarked

There exists a silent understanding between the Invincible Overlord and the Wheelmarked Guild, Ashkarin’s network of thieves and shadow-traders.

  • Wheelmarked thieves are subject to arrest and trial like anyone else—but they know the rule: Don’t get caught.

  • Those who are caught often:

    • Claim guild protection

    • Pay fines through guild-arranged debts

    • Continue their work from inside the system—if useful or profitable

The Iron Claws know this. Some resent it, others exploit it, but none speak of it publicly.

🎖️ Symbol & Uniform

  • The Iron Claws’ emblem is a black talon gripping bronze scales, stamped on cloaks, badges, and stable gates

  • Uniform:

    • Ash-grey brigandine with steel pauldrons

    • Leather helmet with a side-feather signifying rank

    • Curved sabre or short spear

    • Whistle-flute for bird control and distress calls

📝 Incident Report Summary:

⏰ 2nd Bell — "Spilled Potions & Slick Talk"

📍Ashkarin Marketplace, Spices & Alchemy row

  • Claimed he was under merchant guild exemption via Dalmont seal (forged).

  • Kelni bribed with “free breath balm” (recorded as contraband).

  • Wretch shrieked upon approaching the stall—possible magical contamination.

⛓️ Action: Inventory seized, Krellus fined and cited for false seal. Released with warning.

⏰ 3rd Bell — "The Juggler's Blades"

📍Greathook Market central square

  • Observed Marrek of Many Faces performing knife illusions. One blade flew too close to a merchant’s son.

  • Crowd growing unruly. Miri intervened and requested dispersal.

  • Marrek complied but whispered, “Your bird sees more than your eyes, little Talon.”

⛓️ Action: No arrests. Marked for future review. Possible link to Wheelmarked sigil sighted on dropped mask (black swan, white eye).

⏰ 4th Bell — "Ruckus at the Gilded Wheel"

📍Outside the Gilded Wheel Tavern

  • Two guild caravan guards in a brawl with a dwarven delver over Stonehell “shares.”

  • Thunk knocked over ale carts while dispersing fight. One guard attempted to stab the bird—quickly disarmed by Veska.

  • Dwarven delver, named Grukk Son-of-Fenn, claims to be owed shares from a “ghost blade pull” licensed under the Stonehell Trust.

  • No formal notice had been filed. Local beggars say “a pale shadow swallowed her whole.”

⛓️ Action: Entry logged as Tier-2 priority. Passed to Iron Vow. Patrol noted odd bird behavior—Smoulder refused to approach the alley mouth.

⏰ 6th Bell — "Smoldering Coin"

📍Near the Clipped Coin (Loan House)

  • Smoulder found burned Wheelmarked chalk under stone bench.

  • Scorch marks in a semicircle—possible failed sigil?

  • Kelni found three burnt coins, bearing faint glyphs of the old Crownline.

💬 End of Shift Notes:

  • Patrol returning to Windrook Aerie.

  • Veska noted increasing tension in market square between guild mercs and delvers.

  • Miri assigned extra stable duty (bird lamed after tripping on discarded silk roll).

  • Kelni claimed, “This city’s starting to sweat.”
